"At Woods Bagot, we don’t believe that the call for employees’ presence in the workplace is a good enough answer to the situation. It is certainly not one that invites the best talent to provide their best input. Instead, we think that the change required to combat the current challenges offers tremendous opportunity," says Principal Florian Frotscher in his latest Insight Germany's Incoming Workplace Evolution. "We can create places that not only focus on efficiency but also actually drive productivity, with activation and interaction leading to new ideas, true innovation, and a real sense of joy in going to work," he continues. San Francisco's Harvey Milk Terminal 1 tops the list in Green Building and Design magazine's 20 LEED Platinum Buildings roundup. In collaboration with Woods Bagot, ED2, and the Kya Design Group, HKS, the airport terminal is the first LEED v4 Platinum airport terminal in the world. Certified in 2022, the terminal boasts a range of energy-efficient features like regenerative elevators, a 50% more efficient tote-based luggage system, and smart moving walkways. Daylighting and solar shading techniques, along with dynamic glazing windows and rooftop photovoltaic panels, further enhance its sustainability. Innovative fresh air systems and sound-dampening features ensure a comfortable and quiet environment, earning the terminal WELL Core Platinum certification. The stadium is perhaps the most likely type of civic infrastructure to attract public scrutiny. Home to a vast range of experiences, the typology hosts the highs of public life – providing the stage for performances and grounds for sporting matches. Events are formative in every city’s public psyche, so their setting – the stadium – must meet the highest of standards. But what happens when the event is over? Read the latest #insight on White Elephants, Unicorns and why we need hyper-flexible, infinitely purposed major venues. Woods Bagot Director and Los Angeles Studio Chair, Ian Lomas, discusses his design philosophy and what excites him about the future of architecture and design with #ArchitectureLab's Anton Giuroiu. "Everything begins and ends with people," says Ian. As a Director and Design Leader with over 30 years of global experience, Ian thrives on the interchange of ideas and loves when a team is humming with diverse ideas, pushing each other, and relishing the challenge. "I believe that everything has value - and begin each project by retaining everything. This goes beyond the embodied carbon, but the stories and memories of a place, the actions of people who have built and experienced the spaces." Ian's philosophy and focus on agency and empathy are evident in projects like Meadowbank Schools, which won Best School in the World and Best Use of Color at the World Architecture Festival 2022. The initial site excavation for the Sydney Metro Crows Nest Station uncovered only one heritage element – a broken Victorian tile. Commonly associated with Crows Nest, the design team emanated the recurring theme of Victorian verandah tiles to develop a granite floor tile pattern that changes across the station. Woods Bagot Principal Lucian Gormley says, “This pattern is most prevalent at the platform space where we felt it represented a welcome mat for passengers and locals returning home.” The new Sydney Metro Crows Nest Station explores the intersection of community and infrastructure. Precast beams are exposed throughout the paid concourse, in a nod to the infrastructural legacy of the site. The beams are almost woven with the lighter-feeling brickwork fabric to illustrate the juxtaposition of the elements. The University of Tasmania Forestry Building has received the World Architecture Festival's WAFX award for Building Technology, demonstrating industry-leading design solutions to today’s most pertinent social and environmental issues. The WAFX award recognises the world’s most forward-looking architectural concepts, presented to future projects that identify key challenges that architects will need to address in the coming years. Winners have been selected for their demonstration of excellence in addressing the issues facing architecture, society and the planet more broadly. The Woods Bagot-designed campus incorporates mass timber construction, adaptive reuse, and the largest commercial use of hempcrete in Australia, combining a number of innovative and experimental approaches to resilient and sustainable design while restoring and reviving an iconic piece of local heritage. “Working with ‘found conditions’, we have strived to emphasise the existing and let that drive the conceptual direction of the new," says Woods Bagot Director and project leader Bruno Mendes. “We strived to create a campus – not a building – through a masterplan that features a collection of diverse and rich interstitial spaces to meet the disparate needs of the university." Funan is a destination that pushes the expectations of retail design towards an entirely new definition. Porous, hyper-connected and thematically considered in meticulous detail, the project is a civic hub that allows users to explore its offerings vertically and horizontally – walking or even cycling through the space to enjoy its dining, theatre, wellness, co-working, offices, co-living, retail, and outdoor spaces. "Funan forges connection" says Principal Billy Ip, "to ensure that the project’s many advantages could be used to their full potential, great care was taken to make sure that the complimentary uses of certain stores are as seamless as possible. For example, hireable barbeques on the building’s roof are made more usable via the use of an app that allows purchases to be made and delivered from the supermarket below." A “breathable” office tower embracing history, flexibility, and Brisbane’s subtropical climate. Heritage Lanes at 80 Ann Street is a 35-level office tower, incorporating more than 60,000 square metres of premium-grade office space. It’s one of Australia’s smartest buildings, embracing leading technology and sustainability initiatives. “We designed 80 Ann from a deep understanding of the city and the site’s heritage as the former Brisbane Fruit & Produce Exchange,” says Woods Bagot Principal David Lee. “We had a strong desire to re-create the atmosphere of the marketplace and create a memorable destination for the people of Brisbane that feels quintessential to the city.” Read more on Archello: https://bit.ly/3L7V35c Landscape architecture by ASPECT Studios #WoodsBagot #PeopleArchitecture #CommercialArchitecture #AdapativeReuse
