On Wednesday, 14 August over 130 students & staff from ANU brought home the realities of homelessness by participating in the 2024 Vinnies on Campus ANU Sleepout. Together they raised over $14,000 for their local community. In addition to raising funds, this Sleepout aimed at raising awareness about homelessness and issues affecting young people in our community. The event started off with a panel discussion featuring experts on homelessness in the ACT and capped off by a big sleepout. The panelists included Minister for Homelessness and Housing Services Rebecca Vassarotti, Vinnies Social Justice & Policy Coordinator Kwadwo Oteng Owusu, Vinnies Street to Home Team Leader Ben Fitzgerald, Matthew Wilson from Ruby House and Marija Rathouski who shared her personal experience of living through homelessness. A hand up to anyone in need with respect, compassion and dignity.
About us
The St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra / Goulburn has served the community for nearly 200 years across the ACT and surrounding regions, from the South Coast of New South Wales, down to the Snowy and across to Lake Cargellico with a network of stores and volunteer conferences. It is a lay volunteer-based charity that offers a ‘hand up’ to people experiencing disadvantage in our community with compassion and respect. The St Vincent de Paul Society’s most recognisable services are the Vinnies Retail Centres or shops, which are the first point of contact for people who need a helping hand not to mention a one-stop-shop for pre-loved clothing and wares. Proceeds raised from the shops goes to support those in need in the community through our range of programs and services. Funds raised from the community also helps the local community and funding our other support services, which include: - homeless services - youth programs and camps for children experiencing disadvantage - friendship programs for people living with a mental illness - budget counselling - energy efficiency assessments - food and referral services - migrant and refugee support - home visitation - and more. The St Vincent de Paul Society provides a safety net for anyone who has no one else to turn to, no matter what their circumstance.

This National Student Volunteer Week, we want to share stories of our incredible student volunteers here at Vinnies. Meet Claudia!✨ She is a student currently studying a Cert IV in Community Services and has been volunteering with the Vinnies Youth team. Sharing her experience Claudia says, “Everyone is so genuine and compassionate, and the effort that goes into making the kids participating in these programs happy is inspiring. My motivation for volunteering is my eagerness to help others and it is rewarding to see the difference we can make in someone's life” “One enjoyable experience I’ve had while volunteering was when the kids had to dress me up for a clown-themed activity. They caked me with white makeup, a big red smile, and put red and blue hair spray in my hair. We had so much fun dressing up and putting on an act.” - Claudia To learn more volunteering opportunities with Vinnies, visit: https://bit.ly/3qGyk9O
