About us

The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia (Vinnies) has more than 45,000 members and volunteers, who provide practical frontline support, advocacy and friendship for the most vulnerable members of our community. More than 13 percent of the Australian population are living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 percent of wages, and a quarter of Australians live with a long-term health condition or disability. Under our country’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people struggling to survive. The St Vincent de Paul Society is deeply committed to assisting people in need and reaches out to millions of Australians every year through a range of services including home visitation; volunteer-run shops; youth programs; soup vans; assistance for asylum seekers and refugees; compeer programs for people experiencing mental illness; education and tutoring; accommodation services; and health services. The St Vincent de Paul Society welcomes an opportunity to work closely with all members of our community – visit www.vinnies.org.au to get involved.

  • Meet Stephanie, Queensland State Youth Representative and Oceania Youth Coordinator. Steph shares her #GoodWorks journey with the St Vincent de Paul Society youth program. 💎 ‘I found Vinnies in high school, and it quickly became a part of who I am. Starting as a volunteer with the SENSE Youth Mentoring Program, I’ve since joined the St Thomas Aquinas Youth Virtual Conference and taken on the roles of State Youth Representative and Oceania Youth Coordinator. Being part of an organisation so close to my heart feels like a true privilege, and I’m grateful for all the incredible people I’ve met and the chance to support them along the way. It’s never too late to get involved!’ 💎 From primary school through high school, university and beyond, the Society offers young people the opportunity to volunteer, learn and lead while making a difference in their community. 💎 Get involved with thousands of young people around Australia who are making a real difference through Vinnies Youth: https://lnkd.in/g4w5TJNz

  • 'In 2022-23, more than 76,000 children under the age of 18 sought help from homelessness services in Australia. Of these children, almost 16,000 approached homelessness services alone, unaccompanied by a parent or caregiver, with many fleeing violence or neglect at home. Approximately 60,000 children sought help as part of a family group. Australia’s dire lack of affordable housing, especially for young people, and the chronic underfunding of homelessness support services means an increasing number of children are remaining homeless even after seeking help.' The lack of accessible and affordable housing is one the main drivers of the nation’s homelessness crisis. Housing is a human right. The Society is calling on all governments to build more social and community housing and incentivise the use of residential property and land that has been left vacant. Don’t be a passerby! • Sydney Bishop Daniel Meagher says he is distressed by the lack of support for people with acute mental illness who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and urged Catholics to get to know the people they see on the city’s streets. ‘There are people living lives of great loneliness without much social support at all and they can be easily caught in a cycle of becoming ill, hospitalised, returned home and becoming ill again,’ he said. 🌿🌿 In 2016, the Society called for housing to be treated by governments as a human right. It is a core part of our mission to help people by providing housing and accommodation options in each state and territory. These include specialist homelessness services, short-term crisis accommodation, transitional housing, medium to longer-term community housing, and accessible housing for people living with disability. #HomelessnessWeek2024 #HomelessnessWeek

  • 🌿Our services are in daily contact with many homeless people and our members and volunteers hear their stories. What stands out is how twists of fate, like an accident, a health event, relationship breakdown or job loss, can utterly change someone’s life. St Vincent de Paul Society's network of Members and Volunteers across the country is dedicated to helping Australians find a home. • Did you know that in Melbourne alone, 27,408 properties used no water over a 12-month period and a further 70,400 houses used less than a quarter of a single-person household average? The volume of vacant housing in Melbourne now surpasses 2.5 years’ worth of new dwelling construction and could house everyone on the Victorian public housing waitlist twice over. 🏘️ The lack of accessible and affordable housing is one the main drivers of the nation’s homelessness crisis. Meanwhile, property developers and the big banks benefit from the housing crisis, while 122,000 people in our community are homeless. The property industry led the list of business sectors donating to both major political parties, giving $1.2B in political donations over 22 years. Conflicts of interest? You decide... 🏘️ St Vincent de Paul Society is always there to provide support where we can, but we have limited resources. That’s why the provision of more social and community housing is essential. 🏘️ It takes time to build, especially after years of neglect by governments at all levels. 📢 The Society is calling on all governments to incentivise the use of residential property and land that has been left vacant. Please join our call by sharing this post on your social media account. Thank you!

  • 👋🏻 ‘Bitterly disappointing’… this is how the Alliance for Gambling Reform describes the Albanese Government’s apparent unwillingness to properly implement the recommendations of the Parliamentary inquiry into online gambling. St Vincent de Paul Society Australia agrees. 🛑 As the Parliamentary Committee stated, ‘Australians outspend the citizens of every other country on online gambling, and this is wreaking havoc in our communities’. The message was clear: ‘Australians do not like being flooded by messages and inducements to gamble online and worry about the effect this is having on children and young people’.  🛑 The Government still has time to do the right thing to restrict gambling ads, and we urge MPs on all sides to support all measures designed to limit the promotion of online gambling. Media reports are of great concern. The Government seems to be listening to the gambling industry, not to the community or experts in this field.  🛑 Australia needs a comprehensive national strategy on online gambling harm reduction within twelve months. Let’s protect our communities from gambling harm together. Please like, comment 👎🏻 ‘STOP GAMBLING ADS’ and share this post. Advocacy works only if we do it together! Thank you.
