Congratulations to our leading construction management researchers A/Prof Johnson Xuesong Shen and Dr Dr Khalegh Barati from the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety, who are Chief Investigators in two new ARC-funded cross institutional industry/research endeavours! 👏 A/Prof Shen is the UNSW Node Leader for the newly funded ARC Research Hub for Human-Robot Teaming for Sustainable and Resilient Construction. Dr Barati is also a Chief Investigator for the Hub, which will be exploring how construction workers can team up with intelligent robots to make building sites safer and more efficient. Dr Barati is also a Chief Investigator for a new ARC-funded Industrial Transformation Training Centre (ITTC) in digital platforms for Net-Zero Building Ecosystem Lifecycle (NOBEL). The Centre aims to train the next generation of transdisciplinary leaders within the building construction sector, where buildings are no longer resource-intensive structures but eco-efficient and net-zero entities contributing to environmental sustainability. PhD Scholarship Opportunity for Structural Integrity Assessment of Port Systems. The main objectives of this research are to: i) develop a comprehensive methodology for the detection and localisation of anomalies and defects in underwater systems using the advances in dynamic signature analytics, sensing technologies, and data analytics ii) evaluate the performance and accuracy of the proposed methodology compared to conventional methods of structural integrity assessment iii) provide a more efficient and accurate means of assessing the structural integrity of these underwater systems. This research is supported by RIIS Hub: Resilient and intelligent infrastructure systems and the Australian Research Council. Duration: 3.5 year fixed-term appointment. Remuneration: Successful applicants will receive a tax-free stipend at the value of $37,684 per annum, top-up scholarships are also available to eligible applicants. Additional financial support is available through research and teaching assistants, along with opportunities for funded travels to national and international conferences. Eligibility: - Graduated from the top ranking Universities in your country with GPA of above 85%. - Have research experience and at least one journal publication as a first author in a high-ranking journal. - Research experience in signal processing, measurement and testing as well as data analytics. Repurposing waste materials, such as single-use plastic bags, for bitumen modification holds great potential for enhancing sustainability in infrastructure development. Niousha Haji seyed javadi, has recently had this research highlighted on the cover of the Journal of Polymers; with the study involving a detailed characterisation of the waste to identify the plastic types and impurity levels. Each waste component was then examined to determine the influence it had on the properties and performance of bitumen. While per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is an issue the water community is acutely aware of, recent media coverage has peaked public attention, shining a spotlight on where Australia is positioned in terms of regulation and remediation efforts. Professor at UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering and Managing Director of the UNSW Water Research Laboratory, Denis O'Carroll said the heightened public perception of the issue underscores the need to continue monitoring efforts while solutions are developed. A team of scientists from School of Chemistry UNSW, collaborating with CVEN researchers, have designed a system that can activate a reaction to break down PFAS chemicals that contaminate water. The new method, developed by Dr Jun Sun and Prof Naresh Kumar recently published in the journal Water Research, holds promise for more efficient and sustainable PFAS remediation in the future.
