Budding new research in plant biology led by Dr Vanessa Melino at the University of Newcastle is paving the way to produce food crops that not only survive but thrive in salty conditions. “The goal of our research is to help farmers cultivate a food crop in their saline soils using seawater, or brackish water, where they have no other options due to increasing salinisation. With more than two million hectares of Australian farmland affected by salt, Dr Melino sees an opportunity to explore domestication of Samphire, a native salt-tolerant plant known as ‘sea asparagus’, into a high-value oilseed and alternative protein source. Dr Melino hopes to partner with Australian growers and producers, particularly in Western and Southern Australia where the scale of the salinity issue is more severe. “If we can produce oilseed crops using saltwater, farmers can reserve their limited freshwater supply for use on other types of food crops,” Dr Melino said. The NRMA report released in late 2022 estimated that 10 million animals died on Australian roads each year due to collisions with motor vehicles. To prevent wildlife and human injuries from road crashes, University of the Sunshine Coast researchers have started measuring the hopping movements of smaller native roos – to a degree of biomechanical accuracy not seen before. “We need to find out exactly why and how different species of roos hop, so we can better predict their movements in different habitats,” said UniSC Associate Professor Christofer Clemente, who leads the international study. “Roos have been collared with movement trackers for geospatial studies before, but our 3D accelerometry data will for the first time provide a fine-scale understanding of animal behaviour with respect to their habitat preferences. The research ultimately aims to improve safety for both wildlife and road users,” Science PhD student Jasmin annett said. The study is part of a $434,000 Australian Research Council Discovery Grant awarded to Dr Clemente in collaboration with The University of Queensland, University of London, KU Leuven and University of Southern California.
