United Energy distributes electricity to more than 660,000 customers across east and south east Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. We work hard to satisfy our customers and build a business that returns value to shareholders and is respected by government and regulators as a quality, efficient operator. We’re thinking about what our customers will want from energy in five, 10, 20 or 50 years from now. As part of our journey to creating The Intelligent Utility we will give our customers access to the best technology and the most advanced network, with a priority on efficiency and on building our reputation by meeting current and future requirements. A key part of us being able to deliver these objectives and strategies is for us to attract, develop and retain the right people - the best in the energy sector. We are building a new culture, underpinned by values which include safety, respect, collaboration, accountability, empowerment and communication. This is an exciting time for our business and we are looking for people who are ready to make a difference.

Earlier this month we investigated a Mitcham property reported to us by a concerned #electrician for potentially dangerous DIY electrical work. On arrival, our investigators were met not with one dangerous electrical set-up… but a site-wide house of horrors. Our team uncovered a web of unsafe wiring exposing live parts and makeshift electrical cable connections, in some cases connected to crudely-cut panels and switch covers with sharp edges. The wiring inside the residence’s power circuits were wired in 1mm sq cable, and there was no RCD protection. The property owner alleged his #electrical accreditation as being received overseas, however the electrical work performed by the owner was far from Australian safety standards. Our investigators quickly reported the unsafe situation to United Energy who confirmed the home set-up’s high risk level. Zinfra, who arrived to disconnect the energy supply to the house, reported the scene as the “worst [they] had ever seen.” DIY work is dangerous, and illegal. We thank the electrical worker who alerted us to the site for their astute commitment to energy safety for all Victorians.

Get to know another one of our Graduate Engineers: Anush! "I applied for the program because I'm very keen on renewable energy and what better way to get started than where it's all happening! I worked a year-long internship in the Non-Network Solutions team, and it was such a great experience I decided to get on board with the grad program to build on those learnings with other parts of the business too." A huge congratulations is also in order as Anush was the recent recipient of Monash University's Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) Final Year Project Award and the Wilson Transformer Company Prize for his final year project submission based on the pilot phase of our Hot Water Load Shift project.

While Victoria's small businesses have varying energy demands, network pricing should be simple, fair, and suited to the future needs of a changing energy landscape. We've teamed up with CitiPower and Powercor, AusNet and Jemena to gain feedback from small businesses on network tariff structures and how they’re assigned for the upcoming regulatory reset period (2026-2031). We believe the current structures are still fit-for-purpose, and are proposing to retain them, along with the current allocation rules. We value your input. Check out our Small Business Network Pricing Consultation Paper and share your thoughts by 21 July 2024 at https://lnkd.in/gnur7UyY

We've just been shortlisted for the best graduate development program at the Australian HR Awards, joining a very impressive list of nominees. It's a testament to how incredible our program is and how hard the HR team work behind the scenes to make it happen. We'll find out in September if we're the best of the best!

Very grateful to The Australian Power Institute, CitiPower and Powercor and United Energy for giving me the opportunity to participate in a panel about how the next generation view a career in the power sector, as part of Australian Energy Week. I loved being able to share the panel with Parisa Nikdel and Pedro C., who were full of interesting ideas and experiences.

Maria Jose was in her third year of a computer systems engineering and biomedical science degree when she discovered our Women in Engineering Scholarship Program. After experiencing how diverse the power industry was, she decided it was the career path for her. She’s since gone on to become part of our graduate program, where she’s building a career in distribution planning and connection to ensure our grid remains reliable and resilient while supporting our customers’ shifting energy needs. Our Head of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Lola North, said the program has awarded 11 Women in Engineering Scholarships since it began in 2017. "It’s fantastic to be able to not only welcome these talented graduates into our business, but to benefit the broader industry by encouraging more women to consider a career in electrical engineering.” Read more about Marie’s career journey and how we’re creating pathways for women in the electrical engineering industry at https://lnkd.in/g7e644Wu #INWED24 #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay
