Meet our Lead Character Artist, Sougata! First game you ever played: Mafia I. I still remember playing Mafia I and was smitten by the story and direction of the game and instantly decided that I would be a part of this industry to create characters and tell stories. Why do you like working in the game industry? The reason I enjoy working in the game industry is getting the amazing opportunity to create characters and learn more about the mechanics of creating a game. I love the freedom of imagination and working creatively with passion and determination. Also, obviously, my love for playing games means that I am living my dream of contributing to one of the greatest creative industries. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? For someone who is looking forward to joining this industry, I would suggest they join only if they are truly passionate, creative and hardworking. It takes years to master and practice, long hours of practice every day, and to stay hungry for more art every moment. Always look up to other artists who are creating outstanding artworks, taking inspiration from them, and always accept constructive criticism as this will constantly help you to get better both as a person and an artist. What is the Ultimate way to game? The Ultimate way to Game would be on the sacred Friday Night! With all your friends online. The perfect LAN party!!

Meet our Combat Designer, Adam! Can you tell us about your favourite project? That would probably be when I first started to learn UE4 and set myself the goal of creating a multiplayer game from scratch. It was such a steep learning curve and there was so much to do, but seeing that final result of being able to move a character on one computer and see them move on the other computer and knowing you did all of that was extremely rewarding. Why do you like working in the game industry? The notion of "ugh, Monday" is left behind when you're part of the games industry. It's extremely rewarding and fun to be able to create great experiences for others to enjoy on a daily basis. Keeping up with the latest technologies and seeing new creative ways other developers tackle issues means it never gets boring or repetitive. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? Find what it is you love about games and master it. Whether it’s picking apart mechanics and systems, lusting over meshes and lighting, pushing your headphones further into your ears to get closer to the sound, or clicking through frame-by-frame at your favourite animations, if it’s what you gravitate towards then learn all about how it is created and try creating it for yourself. Nothing speaks louder than showing your own works. What is the Ultimate way to game? Some of my fondest memories are from back in the mid-2000s, jumping on Teamspeak/Ventrilo, cracking open a Redbull, munching on some takeaway and spending all night smashing out some multiplayer with some mates...

Meet our Animator, Alexandria! Can you tell us about your favourite project? I created my own award-winning animated short film called The End which was the most agonising but fulfilling time of my animation career so far. Also, I got to work as a cinematics and gameplay animator on Jedi: Survivor which was cool too. Why do you like working at Ultimate? Everyone here is so incredibly kind and knowledgeable and there’s a sense of community and creativity in the team. Everyone’s opinions and ideas are valid no matter the role so it really feels like we are working together to make a game. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? If you have a dream you want to achieve but you’re afraid it won’t work out, do it anyway. And if you’ve tried it and it didn't work out, that’s okay! At the end of the day, you’re learning which means you’re one step closer to achieving your goal to try again, or you learn that maybe your passion or goals are in something else. It’s only when you stand still and don’t start anything that you truly fail. What is the Ultimate way to game? Sitting at a desk is overrated. Gaming while lying in bed, now that’s the ultimate way to play!

Meet our Level Designer, Patrick! Why do you like working at Ultimate Studio and in the game industry? For why I like working at Ultimate, we have many talented people at the studio who can pump out good quality work in a short amount of time. I have to sometimes remind myself that I’m only playing a first pass. For why I like working in the game industry, my passion lies in creativity and pushing technological boundaries. There’s no other medium that can do it quite like games. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? I can speak for Level/Game Design. You probably want to show employers in an interview your own personal projects. When it comes to working on your portfolio, don’t be ashamed to lower the scope. If the jobs you're applying for are ‘Level Design’, you don’t have to create a whole new game from scratch. Doing the art, gameplay, audio, programming, rigging, animation then to show your level design is way too much for one person! This is a good way to burn yourself out. You can stick to block outs or find existing assets, but of course you’ll mention what’s your work to recruiters. Your focus is to make things from scratch that are relevant to your discipline. What is the Ultimate way to game? The Ultimate way of gaming is to come into the office on Fridays and play our own games. There’s a lot of highly talented veterans on the team, so we’re always excited to see what they’re been tinkering all week. A new cool animation, a pretty VFX explosion, a funny new voice line, an amazing vista shot. You don’t know what you’re gonna get in the new build!

Meet our Audio Lead, Scott! What is the first game you ever played? It probably would’ve been Crash Bandicoot as a kid, those games were a ton of fun. But one of the first I can really recall well is the original Diablo - I can still remember the feeling of finally beating the game! Not to mention the amazing soundtrack which just fits the atmosphere and mood of the game so well. Why do you like working in the game industry? Ultimate is one of those rare places that genuinely manages to tick all the boxes: Fantastic work-life balance, incredibly talented and friendly staff, amazing projects, lots of trust and respect, and a genuine passion across the studio for making really amazing and fun games. For me, working in the games industry has always been an important way to give back - I had so many amazing experiences playing video games growing up, and I love being able to be part of sharing that with others. I really feel like Ultimate is the right place to be able to do that. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? Don’t be afraid of failure. Look at each failure as an opportunity to grow, and try to take a positive away each time so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes in the future. Persistence is the key - if you fail enough and keep learning, eventually you’ll be unstoppable! Success is built upon failure. What is the Ultimate way to game? This might be a little old-school of me - but nothing beats a good LAN party! Getting all your friends together in the same room, ordering pizza and staying up late gaming together just really hits the spot.

Supercell recently hosted Timeout, an event where investee studios come together to learn, share insights, and play games! Check out this glimpse inside the event where our CEO and Co-Founder, Tony L., joined a panel on company culture with Metacore CEO Mika Tammenkoski, Space Ape Games CEO John Earner, Phantom Gamelabs CEO Sonja Ängeslevä, and Founder of Games for Good Deborah Mensah-Bonsu as the moderator. While most agreed that company culture is set by leadership teams, everyone noted that smaller teams can also shape the culture together. Where do you think company culture should originate?

Meet our Lead Designer, Tim! Why do you like working at Ultimate and in the game industry? There are heaps of reasons why I like making games. It gives you a “do” element to storytelling that goes beyond “show” and “tell”. It allows you to give players responsibility for decisions, so more emotions can come into play because players are complicit, not just along for the ride. It lets me dabble in art, science, psychology, cultural studies and deep dive into whatever we touch on in the game. You work with passionate, creative people. It’s endlessly challenging and interesting. You help people smile. And you get to share something with thousands to millions of people. Ultimate Studio is a rare breed of studio that ticks all the boxes for me as someone who has been in the biz for 15 years. It has experienced leaders who have come up through indie dev, but also have experience running a big studio, super talented people in each position, a culture of caring for the creative team, backed by solid funding and a boss who earnestly says “we’re here to make remarkable things”. I feel a little bad saying all that when the game dev scene is a bit of a trash fire in general. But, there are good places to work out there. Keep searching until you find one. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? Understand what you love. Understand what your version of success looks like and let that guide you... Do what you love and get really good at it. Like other creative fields like being a musician or novelist, poet or painter, being good at what you love, and sharing that love, will keep you in gigs and growing. What is the Ultimate way to game? If it’s about the Ultimate Studio way, then it’s co-op on a couch in the office, with friendly fire on so Tony can sucker-punch you with thrown fruit. If it’s in general, it’s probably much the same but not in the office.
