    Pembroke was delighted to host Two Good Co at 20 Martin Place, Sydney, to serve their famous ‘Marinastrone’ and pumpkin soup, utilising herbs from our Micro herb garden, installed by Greenspace ESG. Two Good Co is a social enterprise that supports, empowers, and employs women with lived experience of domestic violence and homelessness.    The ‘Marinastrone’ soup served to tenants is a family recipe from Marina, a graduate of Two Good's Work Work employment pathways program, which helps bridge a ‘love and skills’ gap for vulnerable people getting back on their feet and into the workforce after living in crisis. Nick Fox from Greenspace ESG, leant hand with serving and herb pairing, while talking to tenants about micro farming and the Two Good initiative. Greenspace are a community vertical farm service that make local produce sustainable and accessible, with nutrient-rich crops grown indoors.     A huge thank you to Petrina Baker for your service on the Two Good Foundation board. You have been an incredible part of our journey as an impact led organisation. When we look back to when you joined (June of 2017) we realise how far we have come. We wouldn't be where we are today without your advice, guidance and encouragement. On behalf of all of Two Good Co and all of the women we've had the honour to walk beside. Thank you!     “I love the impact of storytelling, and particularly the way that videos can be a tool for inspiration, advocacy and support. Great videos can make you think, feel, act. The medium is so immersive; there are so many ingredients that make up a video that will move and inspire, from great interviews, to carefully curated visuals and music. The end result is a fully engaging audio and visual sensory experience, with the power to connect your audience to a story, a person, a movement. I love using my skills to collaborate with the Two Good team. My favourite part is the production process - it’s such a good mix of interpersonal, technical and creative skills. They’re always so clear with their brief and deliverables, which makes my job so easy on the day - working out how we’ll facilitate the recordings, making decisions about what cameras and lenses to use, so we can achieve the appropriate look and feel for the videos. I especially love sitting with someone and being trusted to journey with them as they share an experience; memory is such a gift. I believe I have a unique ability to blend my interpersonal and communication skills, which help shape my storytelling process and technical expertise in the digital space. I draw on my skills from my previous work as a youth worker - and later, Executive Manager, where I was responsible for managing a team of over 100 volunteers and staff across multiple departments including finance, community services, youth services and social enterprises. I’m also lucky to be surrounded by a passionate, people-centred team who take the necessary time to understand a project, to ensure it stays on budget, to execute and deliver it as best we can. We all share the goal of creating an intentional, immersive end result, and as such, we throw everything into our work to ensure we have an outcome that is beyond expectation.     “Two Good has a profound ability to focus on a hope-based narrative, and not hopelessness; helping survivors find ways that they can be self-resourced, to improve their circumstances for them and generations to come. Through the lens, I get to meet inspirational, courageous women who have overcome startling adversity; who generously and vulnerably share their stories, in the hopes it can help someone else. There’s always a special transformation that occurs during a Two Good interview. There’s understandably a lot of nervous energy prior to filming…but by the end, there is a feeling of freedom, relief, release. There is a lot of support given to each of the storytellers that appear on camera, which is what I love about the Two Good team - their ability to support them, both in the room and beyond. Even their daily lunches; there is something powerful and symbolic about everyone coming together every day, to share a meal and have a conversation. I will always walk away feeling uplifted, inspired and full - in heart and belly, the food is insanely good! It’s certainly not always an easy space to be in, and you can often walk away feeling quite affected by hearing some of the stories. In these scenarios, I’ll default back to my counselling training and practice, to ensure that we can provide a safe space for the women, but also that we can appropriately debrief any of the content. Two Good’s work is critically important for survivors of DV and homelessness. In my previous role as an Executive Manager of a not-for-profit community organisation, I know the benefits that social enterprises can have on communities and individuals. I have seen firsthand how important it is to join with under-resourced communities, to help them break the cycle of disadvantage.” From his commitment to ethical storytelling, his innate ability to create safe spaces, and the craftsmanship of the final product, James Wood has become a treasured partner of ours.     “I remember one woman who’s known as J; it’s too dangerous to be known by her name. Her ex-partner was a Victorian police officer and was the first cop to be charged in five years. The violence against her was physical, as can so often be a part of coercive control – but the coercive control was extremely intense towards her and her kids. She’s been a strategic mastermind – firstly of surviving it, and secondly of informing Victoria Police to actually prosecute perpetrators within the force. But through his manipulation and gaslighting, she came to believe that it was her fault that he was treating her and the kids like that, because she hadn’t managed his PTSD properly. She had even developed a safety plan for her children, but not for herself – she thought that if she ended up being murdered, she only had herself to blame. This process of thought reform means that leaving is a very long process. For those supporting the people leaving, be it colleagues, friends, family – it can be very frustrating. You can feel like you‘ve said the same thing 20, 30, 40 times…to the point where you just don't feel like you can say it anymore. But J said her manager and her colleagues (most of whom were male) saved her life. Because they understood that leaving was not an event; that leaving was a process. The way that they would make her safe was to ask her explicit questions like, “Are you safe at home?” or “Why is your partner so paranoid?”, “Why does he come to the office demanding to look through your bin?”. They would say, “If you're not here at 9 a.m. for a morning coffee every morning, then we're going to call 000” – they could tell she was unsafe. Finally, it was the actions of her manager who literally got her to safety, that stopped her and her kids from being killed when things got extremely risky. So I think that Domestic Violence policies are godsend, partly because they indicate that the workplace has an interest in this. But her colleagues didn't wait for her to disclose. They could see the bruises under her makeup, and they made it known that they could see that. But they modelled a kind of love and respect that she was not getting at home. They built her back up, piece by piece – that's what helped her leave. That is a really important example of that unconditional love and support that is so essential. I think often, when we want to support someone at work, we might want to take a bit of control – but that's not always the best approach.     “The statistics remain confronting. They are more than just stats - they're human beings. - We lost 64 women to domestic violence last year, and already 14 this year (as of 13 March). - One in four women have experienced violence by an intimate partner since the age of 15. - Last year, more than one in two police records assaults were related to family and domestic violence (F&DV). - In Australia, the police receive a phone call about DV every two minutes - and that’s after the fact of how much is underreported. - F&DV is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children – noting we have a massive housing crisis, and safe housing is essential for women and children fleeing violence. - F&DV is estimated to cost Australia 26 billion each year. That isn't investment into DV – that's the cost, because we haven't got in soon enough. To put it simply, women are not safe at this very moment; in their homes, on the streets, or in their workplaces. We can no longer turn a blind eye. It will take every single one of us to look inwardly…and we can. We must play a role in addressing F&DV, and pull every lever available to us. For me, this means addressing attitudes, assumptions and victim-blaming that I see play out every day – particularly in the media, on our radio stations and in the papers we read. Because we're so conditioned by what we read and see and hear, sometimes we don't even realise the violence-supportive attitudes. Workplaces in particular have such a crucial role to play. As of last year, the Australian government legislated 10 Family & Domestic Violence paid leave days in all workplaces. But leave policies are just leave policies, if we're not actually thinking about that key piece – that action. F&DV Leave must work alongside providing safe and respectful workplaces, promoting policies that contribute to gender equity, providing information and support to staff – and that's not just a one-off email, that's continual information. It means providing flexibility for staff experiencing F&DV so they can remain engaged in the workplace. Just look at my situation - from homeless, to having a place and a better job, earning money, can support a family. You will get there too. I never thought that I would be in this situation; I can now say that I'm super independent. These people giving you support and encouragement, believing in you, trust me...It will change your life.” Meet Marvie - Do Gooder, Work Work Alumni and courageous Pathways storyteller. From domestic violence and financial abuse, to homelessness, immigration challenges and debt, Marvie bravely rebuilt her life...all with a newborn in her arms. This clip is one of the many video diaries in our PATHWAYS project - a custom-built tool, built in collaboration with Ecstra Foundation and the American Express Foundation, that connects thousands of vulnerable women to resources and services that empower them to achieve financial freedom and independence. Using video diaries from women with lived experience, we crafted three PATHWAYS - Healing From Financial Abuse, Improving Financial Literacy and Preparing For Employment - with a network of services and resources to guide her through each chapter. Since its launch in June 2023, we've seen 1,600 unique users visit Pathways and 180 conversions to support services through our PATHWAYS journeys.
