Take action for the land you love.

About us

We restore and protect bushland, farmland and urban terrain. With local knowledge, we raise awareness about native plants and animals. And with experience we empower people to take action and connect with the land we all love. Our aim is to promote and assist the revegetation of South Australia and protect its remnant vegetation. This year our 10,000 members are celebrating 40 years of achievement for the environment. Our conservation and revegetation programs have resulted in 30 million native seedlings grown for revegetation and habitat restoration since 1981 and thousands of hectares of remnant vegetation actively managed for the benefit of this and future generations. Trees For Life relies on the support of volunteers, funding bodies, private donors, corporate sponsorship and member subscriptions.

Greatly looking forward to this event hosted by Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN). There is an urgent need for more investment in nature restoration in South Australia. This one-hour online webinar will provide an introduction to South Australia’s unique natural values, strategies for conservation, who’s who, and key campaigns, projects and advocacy underway to protect the state. Join us to hear about our small but effective and collaborative nature conservation sector that has bold plans for the future. A field trip to Kangaroo Island is also being organised by AEGN to learn about bushfire recovery and future priorities for this special place. Contact Margie Jenkin for more information. Let’s make a difference this World Environment Day! 🌍💚 Meet the Eucalyptus odorata (peppermint box), a winter wonder of nature. Unlike most eucalypts, it blooms in winter, providing a crucial food source for pollinators when other flowers are scarce. Plus, it's a great habitat for native birds and butterflies! You can help protect them with our fundraising appeal, Ray of Hope. Trees For Life is delighted that new, stronger tree laws have been announced on 17 May by the State Government. Trees are vital for Adelaide – they keep us cool, filter our water, provide homes for wildlife, reduce noise and create so much beauty. These new laws will go a long way towards protecting our tree canopy in Adelaide which has been greatly impacted over many years by tree removals for residential and infrastructure development. This has been devastating for all of us who love these big trees. The main changes are: • Adelaide’s trees are now protected at a circumference of 1 metre or greater (previously 2 metre) • The 10 metre exemption distance for tree destruction around dwellings and swimming pools has been reduced to 3m. Canopy pruning is limited to a total of 30% every 5 years. • Offset and removal fees have been increased to $1000 for regulated trees and to $1500 for significant trees. Trees For Life has been part of a coalition of groups calling for improved tree laws over many years, including Conservation SA, TREENET Incorporated, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and the Nature Conservation Society Of South Australia. We also acknowledge the great work in 20 Metre Trees in advocating for tree law reform and the thousands of people who have dedicated time and energy to protecting our precious trees. While there is more work to be done to protect our urban tree canopy, today is a day for celebration.

EveryONE makes a difference Every tree, every species, every one of us is connected in a delicate balance. Losing just one species or one piece of precious bushland has consequences for us all. With so much at stake, the responsibility to restore and protect our precious home can seem overwhelming. But even a single action can have an impact on the future of our natural world. Please be the one to make a difference today and donate to our appeal: https://lnkd.in/gPqtXvGM We thank everyone who has already made a donation and supported us throughout 2023. With your help we have the chance to bring hope in the days ahead, one day at a time. Every seed that’s gathered, every seedling tended, every tree planted, every threat removed from the bush, is one step forward. It’s our shared purpose and our vision for the future that keeps us all moving towards the one day we’re dreaming of; thriving landscapes that support a diversity of life. Wishing every one of you a safe and happy festive season!

Trees For Life presents to Parliament: Yesterday, our CEO Natasha Davis gave a presentation on Trees For Life SA ’s submission to the Inquiry into the Urban Forest by the Environment, Resources and Development Committee at Parliament House. Natasha highlighted the imperative for law reform, government leadership, increased public education and addressing the major systemic barriers that are leading to the loss of tree canopy in the Greater Adelaide region. Trees For Life supports the Committees Interim Report and urges members to be even bolder in their final recommendations. Urban greening is essential infrastructure for a climate-fit city of the future. The Inquiry will continue into 2024, with the interim report available to view online: https://bit.ly/4156C4s You can read Trees For Life’s full submission here: https://lnkd.in/grf4Hpsf

Making an impact While both locally and globally we navigate an uncertain and increasingly complex world, keeping nature restoration and conservation as a priority requires an adaptive and determined approach. Keeping abreast of emerging challenges and opportunities is just as important as responding to current priorities. This has been another full and productive year, and I am extremely grateful to the dedicated and capable staff team, generous supporters and partners, and our inspiring volunteers, including the committed board members who provide excellent governance and strategic direction. Yesterday afternoon we unveiled brand new signage that has been installed at Auldana North Reserve, where major illegal tree felling occurred earlier this year. Approximately 50 mature indigenous trees were chainsawed within a 1200 square metre plot and left onsite, with regrowth slowly occurring on the stumps that remain. City of Burnside CEO Chris Cowley and Mayor Anne Monceaux were joined by Councillors Kerry Hallett, Jo Harvey and Mike Daws to inspect the site and discuss its future. Chris said he was glad to see the sign installed as not only a reminder of the illegal clearing, but also a warning to deter similar actions in the future. 'Seeing this sign installed today is a solemn reminder of the callous damage committed here several months ago, yet it provides me with hope that our community will continue to do the right thing and preserve our natural environment,' Chris said. 'Here at the City of Burnside we are dedicated to protecting and maintaining our urban forest, and we urge the community to remain vigilant and report any damage that they see committed to our trees. 'Having photographs, videos and eyewitnesses of illegal tree felling is key to achieving a successful prosecution against those who seek to damage our urban canopy.' We are grateful to the State Government for generously providing $50,000 in funding which has supported the installation of the signage and the clean up of tree debris in the area. This funding will also allow for 15 semi-mature trees to be planted in the City of Burnside, a brand-new walking trail to be developed in Auldana North Reserve and a security camera to be installed to ensure the continued prosperity of the site.
