The National Food Waste Summit kicked off at MCEC today, supporting the fight to end food waste and Australia’s goal to halve it by 2030! 🌱 At MCEC, fighting food waste is a top priority. We’ve found innovative solutions, like our on-site organics dehydrator that processed nearly 55 tonnes of food waste in 2023-24. That’s equivalent to reducing 107 tonnes of greenhouse gases or powering 7,775 homes with green electricity for a day! We also partner with OzHarvest Melbourne, rescuing 9,000 kg of food last year, equating to 18,000 meals for those in need. Looking to incorporate sustainability into your next event at MCEC? Check out our Sustainable Events Guide: https://lnkd.in/gCYmqGF4 End Food Waste Australia #MCEC

At MCEC, visionary ideas come to life, and the world's thought leaders gather. Ten years ago, we hosted the World AIDS Conference, a testament to Australia's excellence in medical research and innovation. The International AIDS Society chose Melbourne for its collaborative spirit and strong government support. We were the only venue in Australia capable of hosting such a massive event, utilising our entire venue and tech team's expertise to facilitate over 100 satellite events and upload 700 presentations to the AIDS 2014 website. A decade later, we're reflecting on the incredible legacy and global impact of this event.
Reflecting on the monumental #AIDS2014 conference held in #Melbourne a decade ago, it's clear its impact still resonates today. Ten-years down the track we are still talking about it. Melbourne hosted over 13,000 delegates, putting our city in the global spotlight for health innovation. Beyond the economic impact and media attention, AIDS 2014 created significant change. Hear from AIDS 2014 co-chairs Professor Sharon Lewin and Nobel Laureate Professor Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, along with MCB CEO Julia Swanson (GAICD), as they reflect on this historic event and its enduring legacy. Melbourne, renowned as Australia’s hub of knowledge and innovation, continues to foster global collaboration and inspire transformative outcomes. Exciting things are on the horizon! Recently, staff from The Gordon Institute of TAFE in Geelong/Djilang visited Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to gain a new perspective on the future operation of Nyaal Banyul. MCEC's Executive Chef Peter Haycroft led a behind-the-scenes tour for representatives from The Gordon’s Culinary School and Commercial Operations team. They explored MCEC's bustling kitchens and saw firsthand how they work. Nyaal Banyul Project Director, Rick Aylett GAICD, and Project Lead, Alberto Errigo, shared exciting details about Nyaal Banyul, highlighting the innovative kitchen spaces and vision for the venue. A morning filled with buzz and inspiration left us excited for what comes from our collaboration with The Gordon as we countdown to the grand opening of Nyaal Banyul in 2026.

NAIDOC Week, which first began in 1975, is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. It is a time to celebrate, recognise, and honour the history, culture, language, and many achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme, chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. The theme acknowledges and honours the enduring strength and spirit of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At MCEC, we are committed to fostering respect, equality, and collaboration with Indigenous Australians. We take this responsibility to heart and reaffirm our commitment to our Reconciliation Journey - playing our part in a sovereign relationship with First Nations peoples to support reconciliation, listening to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and as a Victorian Public Sector entity supporting Victoria's way forward through truth-telling and Treaty. #MCEC #NAIDOCWeek
