Join us in welcoming Mr. Peter McLennan, Chief Executive Officer of the Backflow Prevention Association of Australia Inc (BPAA) at the 2024 MPA Skills and Galvins Plumbing Supplies WA Plumbing Industry Expo. Having been a Perth resident in the early 90s Peter is pleased to be heading back for this special event.   His involvement in backflow prevention dates back to the 1980s. Becoming an early member of the BPAA and having actively contributed to the development of its state branches, he is widely regarded as an expert in backflow prevention.   Utilizing his expertise in cross-connection control, Peter dedicated over three years to collaborating with the Australian Building Codes Board in crafting the National Construction Code, Volume Three, the Plumbing Code of Australia, in partnership with state and territory entities. He has authored numerous articles in trade publications, both domestically and internationally, covering various water supply topics. As a Past President and Life member of the BPAA, Peter also serves as a board member of the American Backflow Prevention Association, representing the BPAA as a Director at large. During the first day of the expo, Peter will be leading the seminar on Backflow Prevention Regulatory Overview, which will focus on the development of backflow prevention and cross-connection codes and standards to ensure the public's access to safe drinking water. This session aims not only to provide insights into the Australian backflow prevention regulatory framework but will also raise discussions on why backflow prevention policies at the local government level vary inconsistently, despite their potential to save lives. On the second day of the expo, there will also be a seminar on Legionella, emphasizing the health risks posed by these bacteria when they grow and spread in human-made building water systems like showerheads and sink faucets. Introducing our seminar speaker, Mr. Neil Savery, Managing Director at the International Code Council. Neil will be making his way from Canberra to the 2024 MPA Skills and Galvins Plumbing Supplies WA Plumbing Expo to talk about the increasing international requirements being placed on traceability of plumbing products, and also to report on the environmental performance of products, such as their embodied carbon and whole of life characteristics. Until recently Neil was engaged by the Insurance Council of Australia as a specialist adviser, he completed four years as chair of, and ten years as a representative with the Interjurisdictional Regulators Collaboration Committee. Prior to this, he was the Chief Executive of the Australian Building Codes Board for nine years. Neil has been advising Ministers on significant building and planning policy reforms, including his time as Chair of the Senior Planning Officials Group, and has been the Deputy Commissioner of the Victorian Building and Plumbing Industry Commissions and served as the inaugural Chief Planning Executive for the ACT Planning & Land Authority for eight years. We are very excited to have Neil as one of the speakers, and no doubt his seminar will be invaluable for anyone in the construction industry. His session is scheduled for Saturday, 10 August from 10.45am to 11.45am in Meeting Room Six at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
