The Hawa Mahal or ‘Palace Of The Winds' - Jaipur India The Hawa Mahal or ‘Palace Of The Winds', the now famous architectural marvel located in the heart of the beautiful Pink City of Jaipur in Rajasthan, BHARAT (India) The Hawa Mahal, was completed in 1799 and today is one of India’s most recognised historic buildings. One of the Jewels in the Crown of Jaipur City, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2019. Designed by Lal Chand Ustashi, the five-floor exterior of the Hawa Mahal is akin to a honeycomb, with 953 small windows called Jharokhas all superbly decorated with intricate latticework. But what makes this building such a work of art is the use of the red, yellow, black, rainbow and pink sandstone used in its construction. Jaipur was the first “planned city” of King Sawai Jai Singh, an astronomer who used #planetary positions as his guide when deciding on the orientation and positions of the structures. He moved his kingdom’s capital from the nearby village of Amer to Jaipur in 1727. Today Hawa Mahal Is one of India's most recognised historic buildings attracting around 1 million visitors annually. What happens when a destination focuses on tourism growth and profit for some as opposed to value and prosperity for all? You end up with local people who have been forced to live with the nightmare of having their daily lives ruined due to a lack of responsible tourism planning and strategy fighting back the only way they can. With all the promises we heard during COVID about restarting more responsibly, sustainable, and equitably, how did we get to this place?
