These are my reflections after a great low carbon concrete workshop hosted by the Industrial and Logistics Sustainability Collaboration (ILSC)….the new cool kids on the sustainability block. 😎 Today, the split between embodied and operational carbon in our built assets is roughly 15:85. As the grid decarbonises this will flip. So the time is nigh to start designing for low embodied carbon. As we consider our climate related risks, low carbon concrete solutions are just as critical as electrification and other physical impacts. Current embodied carbon reduction targets of 20% needs to be more like 40% if we are to reach our Paris agreement targets. Collaboration and shared risk management is essential for meaningful innovation of low carbon design solutions. We’re pleased to see Australia’s Building Ministers growing commitment to Climate Resilience and Net Zero in the Built Environment.   Starting in 2025, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) will include climate resilience as a key objective, developing National Construction Code (NCC) requirements to reduce the impact of natural disasters.   Building ministers and the ABCB are shaping a new direction for NCC 2025, encouraging practical and cost-effective initiatives aimed at reducing displacement and rebuilding costs after natural disasters.   The NCC 2025 will also introduce a voluntary pathway for commercial buildings to measure and report embodied carbon. The ABCB will also explore incorporating a minimum standard for embodied carbon in NCC 2028 to support net zero goals.   Australia’s commitment to climate resilience and net zero in the built environment is growing, however more work is required. A few weeks ago, our very own Julia Halioua joined Lendlease's Ann Austin on stage at the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Circular Economy Housing Conference to tackle the big question: How can our residential sector make a real impact with circular solutions?
