Sensory scientist Desiree Likos from Australian Wine and Research Institute (AWRI) loves her work which explores the appearance, smell, taste and texture of wines to better understand exactly what consumers enjoy in a glass of wine. When Desiree was in high school, she didn’t know sensory scientist roles even existed so she’s keen to share career insights with school students exploring future employment pathways. Meet Desiree at our innovative digital careers website which provides a real-world connection from the vineyard and winery to Australia’s education curriculum. November 2024 marks 70 years since John Fornachon was appointed as the first Director of the AWRI! Did you know that as a tribute to his work, the AWRI library is named in his honour? Now holding the largest collection of technical wine-related literature in the southern hemisphere, its resources are available to everyone across the Australian wine industry. Today AWRI welcomed 60 visitors from the World Wine Trade Group (WWTG) for a tour of our facilities. The WWTG unites winemaking industries and governments to facilitate and enhance international wine trade. In 2024, Australia is chairing the WWTG, with leadership shared by Australian Grape & Wine and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, with support from Wine Australia and the AWRI. WWTG meetings have been held in Adelaide this week and are wrapping up with a technical tour of AWRI and McLaren Vale.

Here at AWRI, we lucky to have ‘kaaruyarta – vineyard’, the vibrant, contemporary artwork by Allan Sumner, Kaurna Ngarrindjeri Yankunytjatjara Artist, in the AWRI Boardroom all year round. The artwork expresses a rich cultivated country surrounded by rivers, creeks and significant cultural sites.
