Last week, Lucy Tan joined Airwallex's Shannon Scott to discuss the $58B embedded finance opportunity. Read more below for Lucy's thoughts on how embedded finance can be a powerful avenue for further growth for startups that have found product-market fit with their core value proposition. #fintech #startups #founders

Last week, Square Peg and Airwallex co-hosted a panel on embedded finance. Shannon Scott (Global Head of Product, Airwallex) and I spoke to a room full of founders about how powerful embedded finance can be as a revenue amplifier. Taylor Fox-Smith and the audience of founders asked some really thoughtful questions, so I wanted to capture the highlights from the discussion in this article: 1. What is embedded finance? 2. How can startups leverage it to boost revenue? 3. When is the right time to integrate it into your core product? https://lnkd.in/g7iB5ak3

Research shows that founders can 2-5x their revenue per customer by embedding financial services into their platform or marketplace, so why are founders slow to explore? We braved Melbourne's freezing conditions to tackle this very hot topic and who better to share their expertise than Airwallex's very own Shannon Scott and Square Peg's Lucy Tan? Speaking to marketplace builders across medical, automotive and gig economy verticals, we were also joined by platform builders across travel management, crowd source funding and e-commerce. Here's what we learned: 📈 Subscription pricing for B2B SaaS is a proven monetization strategy for reliable, and scalable revenue. The limitation is that it's directly correlated to your customer count. Conversely, transactional revenue is uncapped. 👯♂️ These two models can co-exist but, like Shopify, there may come an inflection point where the transactional revenue outweighs the subscription model altogether. Founders may then choose to focus on monetising transactions and opening the gates to their product. 🌱 Founders care about telling their monetisation stories in a way that is clear and compelling for their prospective investors, including the global scale of their ambitions. Lucy used terms like "generational" and "enduring" to describe an ideal startup's proposition. #startup #startupaus #community

What an incredible evening at the June meetup of the Israeli Techies in Australia group, hosted by Square Peg and the amazing Dan Krasnostein! I had the pleasure of being on the panel about entrepreneurship in Israel and Australia alongside Dan and Scott Handsaker, which was truly inspiring. A big thank you to my organizing partners Itamar Amith and Yaniv Rodenski, and to everyone who joined. It's great to be part of such a supportive and driven community ❤️

I’m excited to share that I’ll be continuing my journey at Square Peg as an Investment Principal. The title is new, but the job remains the same: partnering with brilliant founders focussed on big problems, with an infectious passion for the future. I love this job, and am so excited to work in an ecosystem with so much potential. I’m grateful for the founders, operators, and other investors I’ve met in this job. More than that, I’m thankful for the team at Square Peg who’ve supported me over the last three years, particularly the people I work most closely with every day Dan Krasnostein, Piruze Sabuncu, Casey Flint, Paul Bassat, and James Tynan and Lucy Tan - pictured below in one of my favourite snaps from our last offsite.

Right now, it can feel like fintech is fading into the background while AI is eating the world. But I’d argue that for every business - AI-native or otherwise, fintech will eventually matter to you. If you control the core workflows of your customer with your software, the natural extension of that is to own the financial transactions of your customer. When you embed financial services like payments or lending or insurance into your product, you can more than double your value capture. I’m excited to be sharing a panel with one of the best fintech operators I’ve met - Shannon Scott (Global SVP, Product at Airwallex) - to talk about the embedded finance opportunity. Come pop by next week if you’re a founder in Melbourne interested in this space: https://lnkd.in/ga5wymki

My colleague Jack Derwin and I look at how the sentiment is shifting on the once very uncool ASX. The recent successful listing of GYG on the ASX coupled with the high bar for listing in the US is driving some winds of change for VC-backed tech companies. Thanks to James Cameron, Ben Hensman and Luke Anear for their thoughts on the topic. [[[[[[Watch this space]]]]]] Full story: 👇 https://lnkd.in/gMjX24Nk

Monetisation strategies for founders... that's what Square Peg and Airwallex will be tackling over an exclusive roundtable breakfast on July 3 in Melbourne. Despite the potential benefits of embedded finance to a SaaS or marketplace founder, a number of barriers to action - including education - still exist. That's why we have Airwallex's Global SVP of Product, Shannon Scott, and Square Peg's Principal Investor, Lucy Tan, joining forces to discuss the most effective financial model for scalable growth. Here are some of the questions that will be covered: 🏁 In today's competitive environment, speed to market is everything.... how can founders leverage embedded finance in their product roadmap? 🎓 Scalable growth is dependent on graduating from SaaS to monetised transactions, true or false? Why? 🔮 Jack Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Airwallex, often says: “every successful startup will become a FinTech” - what does that mean? Do you agree? 📈 Square Peg has a history of backing payments founders early in their journey... what makes this space so interesting to a VC? Has that interest shifted with changing market dynamics? Spaces are strictly limited. #startup #startupaus #community #vc

"The deal, which integrates Zeller's terminals with the Oracle Simphony point of sale, has been touted as a “huge opportunity” for the Australian payments start-up; and its chief executive, Ben Pfisterer, said it opened doors for the business locally and globally." Zeller CEO and co-founder Ben Pfisterer spoke with David R. Ross at The Australian about how our new partnership with Oracle is accelerating Zeller's growth upmarket.
