Transport connectivity is one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. With more than 190 million daily metro passengers and over 50% of the global population living in urban areas, the need for efficient, sustainable transport solutions is greater than ever. Rail emits up to 70% less carbon dioxide than cars, making it a key solution to urban congestion and pollution. To match global economic growth, an additional USD 300 billion in railway infrastructure investment is needed annually, according to McKinsey Global Institute. SJ will be part of the conversations at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition & Conference 2024 in Abu Dhabi as an exhibitor, joining industry leaders to discuss transport connectivity, sustainability, and the investments required to shape the future of rail. Nilesh Patil SMEC’s Technical Principal - Rail, will speak on the SMEC’s delivery on the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Project – Value Engineering, sharing insights from Australia’s biggest freight rail transport project in 100 years, identified as a priority infrastructure project by Infrastructure Australia in 2016. As a leader in delivering tailored rail and metro solutions, SMEC continues to push the boundaries of transport innovation. It’s time for bold action on renewable energy. Together with over 100 organisations, SMEC supports the global call for governments to #NowDeliverChange by integrating ambitious, specific and actionable renewable energy targets into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). As part of Mission 2025, we join a diverse coalition urging national leaders to drive the global tripling of renewable capacity by 2030. By aligning NDCs with the 1.5°C climate goal, we can ensure market certainty, boost private sector investment and accelerate the transition to a clean energy future. How do we power the clean energy transition with renewables? Karen Atkinson, Global Executive Director for Hydropower and Dams, recently shared a case study on Malaysia’s own journey towards a sustainable energy future, which boasts ambitious targets and a strong pipeline of hydropower projects. What goes into simplifying complexity? Quite simply, everything. Creating clean, net positive, cost effective solutions to complex engineering requirements is deliberate. We work hard at it – often the simplest solution masks incredibly complex workings. It’s our philosophy to deliver simplicity, and we invest in it. At SMEC we create the space for our people to innovate, own their craft, and challenge the status quo. And critically, we celebrate it. Today launches our internal Technical Conference, a four day event, an opportunity for us to identify some of our greatest minds, celebrate their work and share their learnings – in turn upskilling our whole organisation. This is how we drive and deliver the very best outcomes for our clients and our communities. To all our presenters – we salute you. You embody our brand values and over the next four days we will use the technical conference to celebrate your hard work, innovations, and your commitment to engineering positive change. #EngineeringPositiveChange #unlockpotential #technicalexcellence

Did you know that large dams contribute to the storage of approximately 8,767 cubic kilometers of water globally and generate 16% of global electricity through hydropower? Large dams are those over 15 meters high or holding more than 3 million cubic meters of water. They are vital infrastructure that play a key role in ensuring water security, environmental sustainability and economic development.   SMEC is proud to participate as a platinum sponsor at the ICOLD 2024 92nd Annual Meeting and International Symposium from 29 September to 3 October 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India. This year’s theme, "Dams for People, Water, Environment and Development," aligns perfectly with SMEC’s commitment to sustainable solutions, as we strive to create resilient communities and promote responsible resource management through our projects.   We’re also excited to announce that SMEC’s dams and hydropower experts — Freddie, Mahdi Zoorabadi and Sam Lalli — will be presenting technical papers at the event’s Dam Engineering and Construction Symposium on 1-2 October.   Join us as we share our 75-year legacy, including key projects like Snowy 2.0, Ulu Jelai and Kameng Hydro, while collaborating with global leaders to drive positive change. We look forward to seeing you at our exhibition booth. Papua New Guinea, renowned for its rich natural resources and substantial renewable energy potential, is on the brink of a significant advancement in sustainable energy. The country’s vast hydro resources are central to its clean energy ambitions, and SMEC is proud to play a pivotal role in this transformation.    SMEC has been awarded the contract for the feasibility study of the Kuat I Hydropower Project in Papua New Guinea. Situated in the hydropower-rich Finschhafen district, this project will harness the power of the Kuat River to generate approximately 15 MW of clean, renewable energy annually. This energy will be integrated into the Ramu Distribution System, providing a reliable power source to support the growing industrial and mining sectors in Morobe Province.    Our comprehensive feasibility study, which includes detailed design and site investigations, will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team of experts in civil hydropower engineering, hydraulic systems and more. This initiative aligns with Papua New Guinea’s ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.    Tilak Bhattarai, MIEAust CPEng, Regional Lead – Pacific, Dams & Hydropower, emphasises, “This project win highlights SMEC’s expertise in design and our ongoing commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives in PNG.”    Read more about the project here:  https://lnkd.in/gZkGDv68   #Engineeringpositivechange #Hydropower #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment

Over 50% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, with the World Bank forecasting that city populations will reach six billion by 2045. As urban transportation complexity increases, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are more crucial than ever. While traditional ITS relies on field devices and fibre optic networks to collect traffic data, advancements in technology are shifting the focus toward Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technologies, marking a significant leap forward in the field. Hamid Torfeh Nejad and Grant Saunders will introduce Connected Vehicle-Based (CV-Based) ITS Infrastructure and demonstrate how this proactive data-driven technology integrates with smart city initiatives to create more dynamic and adaptable urban infrastructure. This presentation will highlight SMEC’s dedication to advancing global transport innovation at the 30th ITS World Congress. Last night, the Montrose Interchange Upgrade project was honoured with the Most Outstanding Civil Project Award at the SANRAL SAICE National Awards. This recognition follows just weeks after the project’s success at the CESA - Consulting Engineers South Africa Aon Engineering Excellence Awards, reaffirming its vital contribution to South Africa's built environment. The Montrose Interchange Upgrade project transformed one of the busiest sections of the N4 highway, significantly enhancing traffic flow and safety. With its iconic arch bridge and improved capacity, the interchange now serves as a key link for regional and international transport, supporting economic growth and improving mobility daily for thousands of commuters. A big thank you to our project partners, Trans African Concessions (Pty) Ltd. and WBHO Construction, for their collaboration in achieving this success. We would also like to congratulate SMEC’s Edward Archer, whose striking photos of the Montrose Interchange’s arch bridge were recognised in the awards' photo competition - one claiming a first prize and another receiving commended status. Special thanks to René Steenkamp and Marie Moolman for submitting these exceptional images. Sydney Gateway opened over the weekend, marking a tremendous milestone for this transformative project that not only supports the economic growth and connectivity of Sydney's community and infrastructure but also highlights the exceptional work of the team. SMEC commenced its involvement on the project from pre-business case as the Technical and Environmental Advisor, contributing to the achievement of a successful business case, followed by the preparation of a D&C tender design in a consortium not involved in final delivery of the D&C. Post D&C award, SMEC has undertaken Independent Verification in partnership with The APP Group. Our IV team has helped ensure the project meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental sustainability. #EngineeringPostiveChange #SimplifyingComplexity
