Slattery earned the judges’ applause for building a business with diversity at its heart. More recently we were shortlisted as a finalist for the 2020 PwC Award for Diversity for companies with less than 250 employees with the result announced at the Gala in May 2020. At Slattery, we recognise and respect the unique culture and contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people bring to our community and strongly encourage ATSI candidates to apply for our roles. We are committed to First Nations People and are currently finalising our Reconciliation Action Plan “Innovate”. Each year, Slattery runs an innovative and engaging Student and Graduate Program welcoming a diverse range of students and graduates from around Australia. A Tasmanian project wins on the world stage! 🏆   Congratulations to Woods Bagot and the University of Tasmania on the Forestry Building winning a World Architecture Festival WAFX award for Building Technology! This international accolade recognises future projects for their demonstration of excellence in addressing the issues facing architecture, society and the planet more broadly.   This is the first building to be designed for the new inner-city campus in Hobart, encompassing the adaptive reuse of a heritage building originally designed by Circa Morris Nunn Architects. The revival of the campus places sustainability and innovation first, utilising mass timber construction and the largest commercial use of hempcrete in Australia.   Slattery has been working closely with Woods Bagot and UTAS in realising innovative outcomes in construction techniques and materials in a construction market with ever increasing cost pressures.   Render by ERA-co Slattery Peter O'Donoghue Kim Monks

The design for the first Hydrogen Centre of Excellence in NSW has been unveiled! The result of an innovative industry partnership between the NSW Government and the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre, the centre will provide training opportunities for apprentices and workers to upskill in hydrogen technologies that will be essential in the push to decarbonise our economy. Slattery has provided cost planning for the project, working closely with Watson Young Architects and PICAC to optimise the upgraded facilities at PICAC Glenwood campus. Read more about the project in the post below. Uditha Rajakaruna Julian Crow

Exciting news from the PICAC Glenwood campus! Today, NSW Premier Chris Minns announced the establishment of the $25 million Hydrogen Centre of Excellence. Premier Minns made the announcement alongside Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan and Minister for Climate Change, Energy, and the Environment Penny Sharpe. The Hydrogen Centre of Excellence at PICAC Glenwood will offer premier training for apprentices and workers, preparing them for opportunities in new and emerging fields such as hydrogen - sectors that will be essential in the push to decarbonise our economy. The upgraded facilities at PICAC Glenwood campus will feature spacious workshops and classrooms where apprentices will receive hands-on training with hydrogen equipment, such as electrolysers, advanced gas fitting techniques, and essential safety protocols. The construction of the centre will employ over 100 apprentices and create 500 construction jobs, significantly supporting employment in western Sydney. This project is the result of an innovative industry and government partnership aimed at equipping the workforce of the future with vital skills in specialised fire protection, carbon reduction technologies, and advanced gas fitting. PICAC CEO Shayne La Combre highlighted the significance of this initiative that was unveiled today: “This world-leading project showcases the power of industry collaboration in equipping apprentices with essential skills for current and future job markets.”

In an Australian first, a new report quantifies upfront carbon from Australia’s infrastructure and buildings pipeline. With upfront embodied carbon emissions calculated at 7% of Australia’s gross emissions, the construction industry is expected to produce a total of 247 megatonnes of CO₂e over the next five years. It’s an alarming trajectory, yet not irreversible. In fact, we can achieve a 23% reduction in emissions by 2026-27 by using lower carbon building materials and construction methods. Using Slattery’s industry-renowned cost benchmarking and calculations by our colleagues at thinkstep-anz, Infrastructure Australia’s latest report underscores the need to reduce embodied carbon, and forms part of IA’s broader advice to support the Australian Government’s decarbonisation priorities and objectives. With the baseline now in place, Slattery is proudly part of the national collaboration paving the way to decarbonising our industry. Visit the link below to download the report, and please reach out to Tom Dean, Director, Carbon Planning for further information. https://lnkd.in/gjpdinu8

Celebrating 50 years of NAIDOC! This week, and every week, we recognise the enduring histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was our honour to champion First Nations talent at PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival earlier this year through the First Nations Pathways Program. This was our third consecutive year supporting the program together with our industry partners Architectus and MPA. The program equips First Nations creatives and event professionals with learning and training placements, networking and relationship-building opportunities, and pathways to paid work and scholarships at PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, in collaboration with Mob in Fashion.  For NAIDOC Week, PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival spoke to Wiradjuri woman Grace Evans-Craig to reflect on her experience as a participant in this year’s program.
