[Bridges to Prosperity] Exciting news from the Seymour Whyte volunteer team in Rwanda - fully immersing themselves in the vibrant local culture and making great strides in their Bridges to Prosperity mission. Their journey began with a poignant visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where they reflected on the past and marked the 30th anniversary of the end of the Rwandan genocide. The memorial – where the remains of 250,000 people are interred there – serves as a place of remembrance and promoting reconciliation and building peace through education. Next, the team got to work setting up the towers for our 60-meter suspension bridge project, a crucial milestone. They faced the challenge of winching the 4 main cables into position, and despite language barriers and basic methods, they achieved their goal just as the sun set. Joining forces with Bridges to Prosperity and local Rwandan crews, they celebrated their progress with song and dance. Our volunteers have expressed how humbled they feel by the warmth and support of the community. This bridge is vital to improving connectivity by replacing a dangerously unsafe structure. We are excited to see the ongoing construction of the bridge, which will connect communities and foster greater prosperity. Keep up the fantastic work team! We’re so proud of you all. In May, our Cressbrook Dam Alliance team completed a large test pit on the dam wall; a crucial step that provides our design team with essential information to advance the project. Despite the challenges of the remote location, our team’s incredible planning and preparation are paying off, with the bonus of enjoying the breathtaking scenic views surrounding Cressbrook Dam. The Cressbrook Dam Safety Improvement Project’s key focus on sustainability includes: ♻️ Maximising rock reuse 💧 Improving the dam’s filtration system for dam safety ⬆️ Raising the dam crest height to improve flood resilience. This project includes road upgrades, spillway and dam wall reconstruction, and restoring habitat upon project completion. We look forward to sharing more progress updates from this beautiful project location. It's fantastic to see our Palm Beach to Tugun team in action, bringing our environmental ambitions to life with this innovative recycled oyster-shell initiative. We have set ourselves a bold environmental ambition for 2030, focusing on three key areas: 🌍 Reducing our carbon emissions by 30% by 2023 ♻️ Optimising resources through the circular economy 🌱 Preserving our natural environment, rolling out our ecological engineering expertise like this oyster shell initiative. We look forward to sharing more about this exciting initiative.
We are helping boost biodiversity at Saltwater Creek in Currumbin ✔ The crews from the Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrade project have just installed recycled oyster shells to Saltwater Creek—the first of its kind in our road corridor. The recycled shells encourage oysters to attach to them, helping the oysters filter up to 150 litres of water per day. Together, these efforts will not only enhance biodiversity and fish abundance in the creek's ecosystem but also improve water quality and stabilise the creek by reducing erosion. We are continuing to monitor this trial over the next five years as part of the commitment to a sustainable future. If successful, this can be used for other suitable projects across Queensland. This project is jointly funded by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and the Queensland Government. 👩🔧 Gender diversity challenge accepted! 🙌 What better message to share on International Women in Engineering Day than our General Manager of Health, Safety, Environment & Quality, Michelle Nation, highlighting our commitment to breaking barriers and fostering gender diversity at Seymour Whyte. Interviewed at VINCI Construction’s 2024 Conference in Montréal, Canada, diversity is more than an Australian mission - it's a global mission. 🎯 Our goals: 25% of employees are females; and 20% of leaders are female by 2025. We are dedicated to reaching these targets by championing women in STEM fields and inspiring the next generation of female engineers and leaders through strategic partnerships, mentoring programs, and enhancing our learning and development offering with a leadership focus. These are some of the steps we’re taking. #seymourwhyte #asmarterwaytomore #smarterpartnerships #ourpeoplemeanmore #womeninconstruction #womeninstem #INWED24

Our 'Women in Construction - Behind the Barrier' event [6 May 2024], hosted by our Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrade project team in collaboration with NAWIC VICTORIA and Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) was an inspiring journey for both students and professionals alike. 21 talented young women from nearby schools joined us at our site office to delve into the wonderful world of construction. With insightful introductions from Construction Manager Hamish Woodin and MRPV Acting Project Manager Andrew Pong, and a powerful address from NAWIC VIC's Simone James the stage was set for an enlightening panel discussion featuring extraordinary women from diverse sectors within the industry; Amy D., Jess Adams, Anna Koska, Kellie Bolton, Elyshia Bastin, Sharon Hatton and Kathy Lee. Our panellists shared their career journeys, revealing the abundance of opportunities within construction and imparting invaluable advice. But the real magic happened when students got a firsthand look at our innovative eMesh pathway, crafted from recycled materials, witnessing the power of construction. What's truly inspiring is that half of our attendees had never even considered a future in construction. Yet, after an engaging session filled with discussions and immersive experiences, they left with a newfound passion and curiosity for our dynamic industry. We're proud to collaborate with NAWIC VIC and MRPV to spark this interest and empower the next generation of women in construction. 🌟Huge congratulations to our newest ESP-AP-certified Surveyors Greg Lee (CRBR) and Anthony Meech (PB2T)🌟 Greg and Anthony have successfully obtained their ESP-AP (Engineering Surveying Professional - Australasia Pacific) certifications from the Geospatial Council of Australia (GCA). Their hard work and dedication to advancing their professional skills have paid off, elevating their careers and Seymour Whyte's capabilities. Professional accreditations like ESP-AP are a mark of quality mandated by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) for undertaking higher-level categories of survey work on major infrastructure projects, ensuring precision and excellence in all our undertakings. This achievement brings the total number of Seymour Whyte ESP-AP certified surveyors to nine, proudly standing alongside Jenny Arnesson, Jay Argent, Nick Brzozowski, Daniel Di Mattina, Edward George, Richard Owen, and Marian Plucinski. With 159 ESP-AP-certified professionals across Australia, Seymour Whyte now boasts as many or more GCA ESP-AP-certified surveyors as the totals in Victoria (9), Tasmania (6), or South Australia (7). By the numbers: Seymour Whyte Surveyors hold 5.7% of all ESP-AP certifications in Australia. In Queensland, where 106 surveyors are ESP-AP-certified, our team represents 7.4% of the state’s total — a testament to our industry leadership. 🏗️ We remain committed to nurturing a culture of continuous improvement and professional development. This strategic focus not only enhances our project delivery but also sets new benchmarks in the geospatial sector. 👏 A huge congratulations to all our ESP-AP-certified surveyors. 🏉 State of Origin: It's also a 'Battle of Bridges' 🌉 As we gear up for the next thrilling State of Origin series, the excitement isn't just limited to the field. This year, the [internal] rivalry extends to two iconic structures built by Seymour Whyte: Sydney Gateway’s Twin Arch Bridge (2024) and Brisbane’s Go Between Bridge (2010). Just as the State of Origin series brings out the best in our athletes, these bridges remind us of the incredible feats we can achieve through teamwork and determination. Whether you’re a proud supporter of the Blues or the Maroons, let's take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship these structures represent. Here's to the people who crafted these monumental bridges and to the players who will give their all on the field.
