About us

The Scenic Rim is a Local Government area to the east of the Gold Coast and is one of the most beautiful destinations in South East Queensland. The Scenic Rim region is a thriving rural paradise set in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and surrounded by world heritage listed national parks. Home to a population of more than 37,780, the region covers 4248sq km and is located an hour south of Brisbane and an hour inland from the Gold Coast. Known for its breathtaking scenery, it is a popular tourist destination offering visitors plenty to see and do. From its myriad of wineries and art galleries to expansive bushwalking tracks, state of the art equine facilities, growing rural communities and friendly country charm, the Scenic Rim region is a must see destination. Its main towns are Beaudesert, Boonah, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn, Kalbar, Aratula, Canungra, Tamborine Mountain, Harrisville and Peak Crossing. The region's primary businesses are agricultural/horticultural production, the equine industry and tourism/ecotourism. The Scenic Rim region contains more than 30,000 hectares of parkland, including national parks and council controlled parks. The region also contains three dams: Lake Moogerah, Lake Maroon and Wyaralong Dam. Supported by a thriving economy, a farming industry and a vibrant arts community, the Scenic Rim has a strong community spirit and friendly locals. The Scenic Rim Region experiences sub-tropical climatic conditions typically with warm wet summers and mild dry winters. Temperatures range between daytime averages of mid 30C in summer, to low 20C in winter. The average annual rainfall is 916mm. The Scenic Rim region presents exciting opportunities for economic development across existing and emerging industry sectors. Economic development of our region is a priority for Council with strategies focusing on providing a wide range of programs designed to grow and develop business and the local economy.

  • The Scenic Rim sporting community has new and accessible carparking and upgraded driveways at Selwyn Park in Beaudesert and Coronation Park in Boonah thanks to more than $1 million of Queensland Government funding. Scenic Rim Regional Council has completed the upgrade of Selwyn Park's carpark, stormwater infrastructure and fencing as well as the driveways, carpark and stormwater infrastructure at Coronation Park after securing $1.04 million from the Queensland Government’s 2021-24 South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program. Scenic Rim’s Sport and Recreation Portfolio Councillor Stephen Moriarty said Council recognised the important part that sport played in the health and wellbeing of all residents, including those with reduced or limited mobility. “Upgrading the carparks and access driveways at Selwyn Park and Coronation Park has been a priority for Council for several years,” he said. “I am proud to say that this project was completed in its entirety by Council’s operational staff who worked hard to ensure the works were delivered on time. “The completion of this project marks an important milestone for Council in ensuring that we meet the diverse needs of the region’s sporting community, now and into the future.” Cr Moriarty said the upgrades had provided one accessible carparking space at the amenities block at Selwyn Park and one at its soccer club building, and two accessible carparking spaces at Coronation Park’s sporting club building. “Council remains committed to regularly developing and upgrading the region’s multi-sport, high-use facilities so they remain inclusive and can be enjoyed by all members of our community,” he said. Minister for Local Government Meaghan Scanlon said the Miles Government was proud to invest in communities through the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program. “We’ve already seen the benefits the SEQ Community Stimulus Program is delivering for local economies, tradies and families right across the Scenic Rim region. "I look forward to seeing the lasting benefits this project will deliver for the local community." This project was proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with Scenic Rim Regional Council.

  • Following community consultation which scored one of region's highest participation rates, Council has adopted the Scenic Rim Sport and Recreation Plan 2024-2034. The plan, adopted at Council's Ordinary Meeting yesterday, aims to increase the health and wellbeing of the Scenic Rim community through participation across all age groups in sporting and recreational activities. Consultation on the draft plan, through the Let's Talk Scenic Rim online community engagement platform and attendance at eight face-to-face sessions across the Scenic Rim from 2 April to 6 May 2024, resulted in 259 submissions. The Scenic Rim's Sport and Recreation Portfolio Councillor Stephen Moriarty thanked the community for providing feedback on the draft plan, which was prepared in consultation with sporting organisations from across the region, peak sporting bodies, Queensland Government departments and non-Council sport and recreation providers. • Community feedback has resulted in Scenic Rim Regional Council's decision not to proceed with a public artwork planned for Kalbar. In February 2024, Council called for expressions of interest from the creative community for the design for a mural to adorn the Welge Street side of Kalbar's heritage-listed Wiss Bros Emporium which is privately owned. The mural project aimed to celebrate Kalbar's rich sense of community and its place in the Fassifern Valley through an artwork that reflected the creative excellence of the Scenic Rim. The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation had assessed the proposal and determined that the mural design put forward would have little to no impact on the cultural heritage significance of the building which dates back to 1909. However, Scenic Rim Deputy Mayor Duncan McInnes said the mural proposal did not have widespread support within the local community and this has been acknowledged by Council in its decision not to proceed with the project. "Council has listened and responded to the concerns that were raised and trusts that this decision will be welcomed by the Kalbar community," he said. Scenic Rim's Community Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Kerri Cryer said Council valued the community's feedback. "While there are a number of people who will be disappointed that the mural project will not proceed, Council has considered the views of the wider community who did not support a public artwork on this local landmark," she said.
