Congratulations on Samar Mcheileh and those involved with Equity Clear for shining the spotlight.
Scale is a female focused angel investor network. At Scale we empower Australian investors to connect, invest and succeed. We provide investment and support to diverse founders in early stage businesses. Since 2013 Scale Investors have been activating early stage female led organisations and building a supportive and sustainable network that invests in female founders today to create the female investors of tomorrow. The Scale Angel network is an exceptional cohort of accomplished people who believe that investing in and supporting talented diverse teams will create the iconic businesses of tomorrow. Of the total venture capital funding available only 2% is deployed to women, yet female owned companies generate more revenues with less investment. Women are two times more likely to take social impact of a deal seriously however are not taken seriously despite having 50% of the good ideas. The evidence is clear, McKinsey and Company’s 2015 “Why Diversity Matters” research found the top quartile of gender diverse public companies are 15% more likely to outperform industry medians. It starts with us; the Scale Investor network has a powerful role to play to activate early stage female led organisations. We welcome all investors who share our vision of maximizing returns by supporting early stage businesses that value gender diverse leadership.

It seems fairly obvious that the quality of your insights is directly related to the quality of your data (right??). Then why - so often - do place makers and planners try to understand 'place' while using irrelevant data boundaries? The day our Analytics Lead told me we could set our data boundaries based on 'where the activity is' or 'what you can walk to', was a gamechanger for me. As a recovering urban designer myself, I get exceptionally frustrated when the same old suburb boundaries are used, without a thought to the actual lived experience of a place. Suburbs - especially in our growth areas - are often large and totally agnostic to the hubs of activity. So why are we still doing it? These days, digital data has the flexibility to be defined by the user. So please stop using suburbs, or at the very least; make sure you quickly jump into a tool that gives you the flexibility for genuine hyperlocal exploration. Obviously I think the Neighbourlytics tools are a great place to start - instant reports for 9,300 hubs of activity across Australia (or just define your own if you want to). Hey there! We've popped the cap on Tinyspace 🥂. What a pleasure to join Megan Luttrell and Aussie Founders Club for our introduction into a blossoming start up community at their recent event focused on "The 101 of Funding Your Startup". In an blatant effort to curry favour and piggy back off of their LinkedIn profiles, we've listed them👇 Stephen Graham on the warm and fuzzies of venture studios (Shadowboxer) Scotty Allen 🚌 nudging everyone along with his provocations (The Product Bus) Samar Mcheileh on Venture Capital's joyful pursuit of gold coins (Scale Investors Pty Ltd) Matt Vitale on Crowd Funding wins and fails, slam dunking with some in-the-room evidence (Birchal) Blair Smith on why wrestling seed funding from distant aunties and uncles can give you everything you need (Greywoods) Aprill Enright-Allen debunking some of the fears around debt as an alternative source of capital (Tractor Ventures) And thanks to Joe Young from Mayfly Ventures, who pawned his Rolex to pay for the bar tab. ...and we're off!
Recently Partner Solai Valliappan spoke at the #VogueCodes Visionary Women's Dinner hosted by Vogue Australia on tech, investing and AI. Solai shared about the confluence of trends and how Scale Investors Pty Ltd is following the money by investing in women-led businesses. Recently Vogue Australia invited me to their Vogue Codes dinner to speak about tech, investing and AI alongside Ashi Bhat and moderated by Francesca Wallace. As everyone knows me and my Scale Investors Pty Ltd Partners Samar Mcheileh, Roo Harris and Chelsea Newell love stats and here are some numbers I mentioned on the night: * $3.5B of venture capital was raised by Australian founders in 2023. 14% of this went to mixed gendered teams and 4% to all-women founding teams. This is less than $1 in every $5 raised for a founding team with a woman (Cut Through Ventures) * The research shows that women-led businesses outperform: 35% higher ROI, 10% higher revenues, two-thirds more capital efficient (Kauffman, BCG, Illuminate Ventures) * $3.2 trillion of generational wealth is set to transfer to women over the next decade in Australia (JBWere). What are you doing now and where will you be for this transition coming down the line? I loved the chats afterwards and here are my main takeaways from the evening: 1.👩🏾💻Our jobs will continue to evolve thanks to tech and AI: it was fascinating to hear people reflecting on their first job and whether it still exists or in a different form? For example my first job was at the checkout at Woolies, there are definitely more self-serve checkouts these days! Now extrapolate what that could look like in the future for you with where you are now and your role. 2.🔬How much people love STEM: it was infectious to hear people sharing with such enthusiasm of how and what maths and technology they’re using to enhance their roles, even in industries or areas where it may not be initially obvious. 3. ✨Style is not exclusive of substance: The number of people especially women of colour (positively) commenting on my outfit and jewellery. Previously I would’ve been far too self-conscious or concerned it wasn’t “professional” for a work panel. No matter what you choose to wear it does not impede the smarts of what you bring to the table, it actually invites others to join! Thanks Jessica Montague, Francesca Wallace, Nikki Chowdhury and the rest of the Vogue Australia team for hosting such a wonderful evening and also the #VogueCodes Technotopia conference which was incredible!
