It seems fairly obvious that the quality of your insights is directly related to the quality of your data (right??). Then why - so often - do place makers and planners try to understand 'place' while using irrelevant data boundaries? The day our Analytics Lead told me we could set our data boundaries based on 'where the activity is' or 'what you can walk to', was a gamechanger for me. As a recovering urban designer myself, I get exceptionally frustrated when the same old suburb boundaries are used, without a thought to the actual lived experience of a place. Suburbs - especially in our growth areas - are often large and totally agnostic to the hubs of activity. So why are we still doing it? These days, digital data has the flexibility to be defined by the user. So please stop using suburbs, or at the very least; make sure you quickly jump into a tool that gives you the flexibility for genuine hyperlocal exploration.
