In our transitioning energy environment, modelling and adapting to consumer-driven technology adoption is critical. The ability to consider diverse and dynamic system settings, real or simulated, offers new and important capabilities to: 🔹Electricity network operation 🔹Policy development 🔹Energy product innovators 🔹Built environment developers. We are pleased to announce our latest project, “Ask The Energy System”, a collaboration with RedGridGPT and Monash University.  💡 This innovative project is set to explore new opportunities to model, understand and manage energy systems using AI-assisted tools. The project will integrate advanced gaming and virtual reality software to automate the creation of network environments. The integration of generative AI will allow proprietary information to be incorporated into the model to establish situational awareness and to allow specific network, industry or community use case exploration. ➡ The outputs of this short project will advance new and sophisticated options for future energy modelling that is easy to query and understand emerging challenges as well as propose or test future scenarios for a range of industry stakeholders.  The project will be led by Assoc. Professor Markus Wagner from Monash University together with Simon Wilson, CEO of RedgridGPT. “Developing policy for Australia’s clean energy transition is not an easy feat due to the inherent complexities of the energy system and the diversity of agents and stakeholders.” – Marcus Foth, QUT (Queensland University of Technology)    In 2023, RACE for 2030’s PhD student Dr Vikki McLeod completed her PhD research project, ‘The Role of Demand Flexibility Trading in Australia’s Clean Energy Transition: A Systems Thinking Approach’. Out of this came this report, which outlines some of the research findings. We're thrilled to share the results of a world-first project implementing a dew point CO2 (DP-CO2) refrigeration system in a South Australian Coles Group supermarket! The DP-CO2 integrates energy efficient dew point air coolers with low global warming potential CO2 refrigeration to achieve significant energy savings, particularly in hot, dry climates. An analysis of measured data from the DP-CO2 system, together with the results of detailed modelling show that: 💠 Up to a 37% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional systems can be realised during summer. 💠 The system maintained cool supply air temperatures of <20 °C for more than 98% of the time, even when the ambient temperature exceeded 40 °C. 💠  There is a potential for 4-27% energy reduction across various sectors based on climate and application. 💠  The DP-CO2 system represents a significant leap forward in sustainable commercial refrigeration. This project demonstrates the potential for this technology to revolutionize how we cool supermarkets, hospitals, abattoirs, and more! This project was a successful collaboration with our partners Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP), Seeley International Pty Ltd, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), and the University of South Australia for which we are thankful for their contribution. The second Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP) heat pumps series tour is currently underway, showcasing the potential of heat pump technology. Attendees explored Trinity College’s ground source heat pump and RMIT University’s training centre and refrigeration lab.   We have been speaking to industry representatives to gain the academic perspective, through to understanding the technology, and down to the tradespeople who undertake the installation.   There is so much potential for heat pumps; by building awareness and overcoming challenges, we can encourage greater adoption. Meet Tanya Singh, a top-up scholarship recipient at UNSW who is now part of our PhD program! Tanya is a passionate researcher dedicated to improving health outcomes related to environmental challenges. Her impressive background includes a Master’s in International Development Studies and a Master's in Public Health, specialising in environmental health. Before starting her PhD, Tanya conducted impactful research at Wageningen Environmental Research. There, she investigated environmental health risk factors in South Asia.    Drawn to the RACE for 2030 PhD program, Tanya sees an opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
