Fresh from completing the Design Thinking course at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, I am excited to share some insights from this open-minded approach to problem solving and product designing. At Prospecta Software, customer centricity has always been at the heart of our decisions. Design thinking is a powerful tool for product designing, aligning perfectly with our values. Here are a few key takeaways from the course that translate directly into the product designing process: 🔹 Customer Centricity – Design thinking places the customer at the center of the design process. We start with empathetic customer understanding and approach problems without any preconceived solutions. By gathering insights directly from users, we address business challenges with a fresh perspective. 🔹 Factor in Emotions – Design thinking can be challenging because it involves qualitative data and considers customer emotions. Sometimes, customer feedback may be unfavorable even for products we believe are flawless. However, emotional responses often drive innovation more effectively than dry charts and graphs. 🔹 Collaborative Ideation – Designing needs to be collaborative, with open acceptance of divergent thinking. Wild ideas can lead to brilliant solutions. Creating an 'ideation zone' where the team can freely brainstorm and share ideas is crucial. 🔹 Prototype and Test – Prototyping is immensely powerful in product development. Building simple, small-scale prototypes allows us to observe, record, and assess user performance and reactions. This helps in making appropriate refinements and alterations. 🔹 Overcome Fear of Failure – Fear of failure should not drive the product development process. Unsuccessful outcomes can be uncomfortable, but they are part of the path to success. Prototyping helps tackle failure on a smaller scale, ensuring the final product is stronger. Embracing these principles can transform the way we approach product development, making it more innovative and customer centric. Three Maintenance Repair & Operations (MRO) questions to answer to run better: 1.     What makes a Material Master record a quality record? 2.     How to measure? 3.     What’s the impact of quality? 1.           Too often MRO outsiders skilled in data and analytics use cases offer up dimensions of data quality like accuracy, completeness, consistency, uniqueness, timeliness, and validity. These are difficult to make useful measurements in a compound record with many fields that serves multiple purposes. The analytics quality dimensions are not helpful.  A common definition of quality is “something that meets it purpose”. The purpose of an MRO item record is to represent a real-world MRO item in the ERP/CMMS. A comparable identity is necessary to reduce the fog and chaos of multiple records existing for the same thing. My experience confirms identity as the primary quality attribute for MRO success. Accuracy in reorder points, lead times are secondary quality measurements that can benefit from attention once quality identities are in place, and you have a process to maintain identity integrity. 2.           To be useful quality concepts need be quantitative measures. Qualatative measures are not useful when dealing with tens or hundreds of thousands of records. My concept of quality is a yes, no answer to the question: Does this record conform to an approved template in the MRO item identity standard? You then know if 50% or 95% of your item identities are compliant and even better which ones are not compliant. You can decide the value of fixing, or if leaving those records as is acceptable. You have actionable information. 3.            I won’t go in depth here, as I often write on the business case for quality MRO item identities. The impact of quality is more effective and efficient MRO business processes. Cost savings directly increase profit. Many companies have goals of improving maintenance performance (for good reasons), a goal that is easier to achieve when not fighting material support chaos. Personnel and process safety improve when MRO items are correctly supplied. Working capital for MRO can be reduced, and costly non-inventory work around purchases can be stopped without a fight. If thought out clearly, MRO material master record quality is usefully attainable. Let’s have a conversation about your MRO #MRO
