In this research from OECD Education and Skills, it is great to see Australian schools statistically above average for creative thinking. We have recently done exciting work with Dr Tim Patston, the leader of Creative Actions consultancy activities, where together we developed new additional questions that schools using Pivot's Student Survey on Teaching can add to their next survey cycle. This provides deeper insights into areas of interest such as creativity in education.
🚀 The results are out! 🚀 For the first time, the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment measures the creative thinking skills of 15-year-olds around the world. In which countries and economies are students performing the best? #Singapore #Korea #Canada* #Australia* #NewZealand* #Estonia #Finland #Denmark* #Latvia* #Belgium It is important for education systems to promote creative thinking as it can be a powerful driver for learning. Creativity is also important as in today's job market routine skills are more susceptible to automation. How creative are students in your country? In a recent survey of Pivot Wellbeing for Learning Program Users, we found that 81% of respondents indicated that the survey captured new data that they would otherwise not have access to. On top of this, it has help to open up conversations about wellbeing within the classroom, and increase the understanding of their student's own wellbeing. By providing students with a way to reach out for help or support in a timely manner, it has made a huge impact on overall wellbeing for schools who use the Pivot Program. Pivot Professional Learning reposted this
Terrific news on explicit phonics instruction moving into Victorian schools! Of course our fabulous Pivot Professional Learning schools have been using our student perception survey on teaching, with Pamela Snow’s additional questions on explicit phonics, from 2018. Asking students to provide feedback on specific teaching practices in literacy instruction - like other areas of teaching, including maths - provides teachers and leaders with tangible, actionable insights on how teaching and learning is going in each classroom. And Pivot Professional Learning insights dashboards provides an excellent ‘line of sight’ on phonics rollouts for government and system leaders, too. Kudos to Ben Carroll - and congrats on the advocacy by so many for so long Pamela Snow Tanya Serry Jordana Hunter Jessica Del Rio Julie Sonnemann Katie Roberts-Hull Dr Jennifer Buckingham
Victoria is the education state. We as a state will continue to lead the nation when it comes to education and it is at the core of what we do. That's why from 2025 we will be taking the next step in this journey by responding to the latest evidence and putting explicit teaching at the core of teaching and learning. Explicit teaching doesn't mean strict and simple methods, its quite the opposite. Sophisticated, inclusive, highly interactive, fast-paced techniques and interventions that is teacher led will be at the core of this. These changes also include best practice teaching of phonics in the early years. We know that early years learning is critical to any education journey. Studies show that children learning by the explicit and systematic phonics methods are two years ahead of their peers. Even more so, just two months of teaching phonics has been shown to put students ahead compared to all other methods. These reforms will ensure that every student will have a solid foundation and understanding of literacy as they progress through their education journey.
