About us

NSW State Emergency Service is a volunteer-based emergency service that is responsible for helping communities prepare and respond to floods, storms and tsunami. We also have specially trained volunteers that provide support to other emergency services during land searches, as community first responders, and even for vertical, urban, and road crash rescues. There are a number of exciting and rewarding ways you can get involved with our service, whether it be joining as a volunteer at one of our 250 units across the state, or even as a staff member. By getting involved, you will be joining a team that is passionate about saving lives and creating safer communities. The NSW SES Packsaddle Unit just got a major upgrade! The new $223,000 investment has made the NSW SES Packsaddle Unit even better equipped to serve the community. Upgraded toilets, shower facilities, a kitchen, and operational space are some of the new features. Acting Commissioner Debbie Platz APM officially opened the new facility, celebrating the incredible work of our Packsaddle volunteers. Not only does the unit support in flood and storm response, but it also plays a crucial role in general land rescues and road crash rescues along the Silver City Highway. The Packsaddle Unit also doubles as a hub for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), hosting their clinic each fortnight to deliver essential primary health services, including dental and mental healthcare, to the community. With the new upgrades, both our dedicated SES volunteers and RFDS teams are now more prepared than ever to respond to emergencies and provide critical healthcare. GIANT Support for our fellow team in Orange! Last week, our NSW SES volunteers had the incredible opportunity to meet the GWS GIANTS AFL and AFLW players at the GIANTS Headquarters ahead of their home game on Saturday, August 17th! Starting with a tour of the VAILO Community Centre, our volunteers then watched the players train before wrapping up this awesome day by chatting with the athletes. Our Orange Army will be cheering on the GIANTS to victory this weekend.

  • Last weekend, our team gathered on Yuin Nation land in the Shoalhaven for an impactful Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training Day. This day was dedicated to yarning, listening, and truly understanding the stories and experiences shared by the local Aboriginal community. Led by the Burraga Foundation and guided by the wisdom of community members, the day deepened our understanding of Aboriginal perspectives. It was an essential step in building on the knowledge and empathy needed to show up and support all communities we serve, particularly our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members. Storytelling is at the heart of community, and as a community-based organisation, it's crucial for us to listen, learn, and create safe environments where every story is respected and valued. Together, we're building stronger, more supportive connections, ensuring that our service is inclusive and culturally respectful. Thank you to everyone involved for making this day a meaningful and memorable experience. Your stories help us grow, and we're committed to continuing this journey together.

  • Celebrating International Youth Day by shining a spotlight on our Young Volunteer of the Year Award winner, Anton! At just 18 years old, Gilgandra Unit member Anton Dieck embodies the spirit of dedication, commitment, and resilience that defines our young volunteers. Joining the NSW SES at 16, Anton has already made a significant impact, earning him the Young Volunteer Award! Anton doesn’t have his own transport yet, but that doesn’t stop him! He shows incredible dedication by walking to the Gilgandra Unit for every meeting and training session. Anton is often one of the first to arrive for operational callouts, even when he’s traveled by foot. During his time time with us, Anton has completed numerous qualifications, proving he's a future leader in the making. Today, on International Youth Day, we celebrate all our young volunteers who inspire us every day with their passion and drive. A big shout out to Anton and all the incredible young people making a difference in their communities! #InternationalYouthDay #YouthInAction #NSWSES #VolunteerHeroes
