Celebrating World Ophthalmology Day: Honouring Our Nexus Ophthalmologists and Pioneers in Eye Care August 8th recognises renowned ophthalmologist Svyatoslav Fyodorov, a Soviet doctor born on this day in 1927. Widely considered the pioneer of several branches of eye surgery, Fyodorov played a pivotal role in shaping modern ophthalmology. Today, cataract and glaucoma surgeries bring immense benefits to Australians, with cataract surgery recognised as the most successful procedure worldwide. These surgeries are crucial for maintaining independence in our senior years. At Nexus, we deeply value the work our ophthalmologists perform. Their complex clinical and surgical skills in preserving and restoring vision make a visible difference in the lives of patients every day. The Facts: 〰️ 9 in 10 Australians say that 'sight’ is their most valued sense. 〰️ Over 13 million Australians self-reported having one or more chronic (long-term) eye conditions in 2017-18—that’s more than one in every two people! 〰️ Around 90% of all blindness and vision impairment in Australia is preventable or treatable if detected early. 〰️ First Nations communities suffer disproportionately from vision impairment and blindness, emphasising the need for targeted eye care services. Thank you to all ophthalmologists who have dedicated themselves to this essential field. Let’s celebrate the incredible advancements in ophthalmology and continue to support efforts that ensure everyone has access to quality eye care. #WorldOphthalmologyDay #EyeHealth #ThankYouOphthalmologists #SightMatters #CataractSurgery #GlaucomaTreatment #PreventBlindness #HealthyVision #OphthalmologyInnovations

It's Time Out July at Nexus Hospitals! Nexus is 100% committed to providing the highest standards of patient safety in all of our hospitals. That's why our hospital teams participate in an annual Time Out July event as a safety measure to make sure that our patients receive the proper checks before surgery. A surgical "time-out" is the surgical team's short pause, just before incision, to run through a safety checklist, confirming that they are performing the correct procedure on the correct body part of the correct patient. Following the correct procedures prior to surgery prevents complications. This simple exercise brings together our valued VMOs and dedicated operating teams. In recognition of their support, all Doctors participating in Time Out July will receive a free round of coffee for their entire theatre team! ☕ Pictured is Chief Medical Officer Dr Anthony Chambers, supporting TIme Out July 2024 for patient safety! #TimeOutJuly #NexusHospitals #MontserratHospitals #PatientSafety #TeamTimeOut #SurgicalCare #VMOSupport

Westside Private Hospital recently had the pleasure of hosting ophthalmologist Dr Madeleine Adams, the team from Insight Eye Surgery, and 20 optometrists for an enlightening evening focused on cataract surgery. Dr Adams delved into the myths and misconceptions surrounding cataract surgery, providing invaluable insights to our attendees. Under the leadership of General Manager/Director of Nursing, Jamie Mann-Farrar, guests toured Westside Private and experienced the patient journey from admission to discharge. Optometrists enjoyed the opportunity to scrub in and get a hands-on feel for the latest technology in IOLs and cataract surgery techniques. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. 💬 “Fantastic CPD. Thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience.” 💬 “Loved the loading of IOLs and pretend cataract surgery.” 💬 “Great to do something different for CPD.” A big thank you to Zeiss for their sponsorship and support in making this event a success.
