Neami National is a not-for-profit organisation providing services to improve mental health and wellbeing.

About us

We’re Neami. We’re big believers in everyone having the opportunity to live a full life – and we give our all to support people to achieve the wellbeing and mental health outcomes that matter to them.  For some people this means having a stronger sense of self. For others, it might mean nurturing relationships, and for others, it could be building the confidence to tackle tomorrow. Everyone has different goals for their own life, and at Neami, we walk alongside people to help improve their quality of life, on their terms.  We are proud to support 32,000 people living with mental health challenges across Australia and offer more than 70 services, over 49 different Indigenous lands, across the nation. These include mental health and wellbeing supports, housing and suicide prevention services. Our practice is informed by evidence; what’s been proven to help people with mental health challenges and adversity, and what people tell us helps. But we continually adjust and improve our approach with consumers, to make sure that we’re doing the very best we can.   Moderation guidelines: https://www.neaminational.org.au/privacy/social-media-guidelines

Emergency departments are often the default for people in mental health distress, but they aren’t always the best option.   Safe Spaces in Brisbane’s North are an example of a community-based alternative proven to improve consumer experience and outcomes and save money in avoided hospital visits.   Investing in accessible mental health services is essential for a system that minimises hospital reliance, keeps people well in the community, and leaves no one to fall through the gaps.

Queensland is at a crisis point where community based mental health services are extremely under-funded. Today we launched our campaign drawing attention to the need for community mental health funding to be a key state election issue. Far too many Queenslanders are slipping through the gaps. A recent report has revealed that the total UNMET need for people needing support for their moderate to complex mental health needs is 493,600 in Australia, and of those, more than 92,000 of them are Queenslanders. Much more funding is needed to bridge the gap in State-funded psychosocial supports for severe and complex mental illness and ensure that Queenslanders can access the supports they desperately need. The funding we are requesting is not just necessary – it’s crucial. Please join and share our campaign in asking your MP to fund community mental health. On his recent visit to our region, Brisbane North PHN was pleased to join Minister for Health and Aged Care the Hon. Mark Butler MP to tour one of three PHN-commissioned Integrated Mental Health Hubs, and a co-located Safe Space, operated by Neami National at Strathpine. The hubs combine clinical and non-clinical services to facilitate access to tailored packages of mental healthcare for those with acute mental illness. Findings show this integrated model of care is working to support these members of our community: 👨👩👧👦 On average, 680 individuals receive services from these hubs each year, including those experiencing homelessness, and who identify as LGBTQIA or First Nations. ☑ Those with severe and complex mental illness who accessed the hubs reported positive experiences and improved recovery outcomes. 🤝 Participants consistently reported that the psychosocial support provided is highly valued. 🔗 Read more about the hub model and the Minister's visit online: https://bit.ly/3WAolil.

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Our First Nations team was honoured to recently be welcomed onto Masig Island country by Yessie Mosby, a leader of the Kulkalgal Tribe, a special place in the Torres Strait Island Region. Yessie shares a powerful message about the spirit of maintaining, ‘Connection to land and culture: when far from home’. ‘Know that we back in country we always look at that same moon. When you see that moon: • You see us • You see your culture • You see your tradition • You see your language • You see your people and know that by looking at that moon the heartbeat of home still pumps an ancient tune of that drum beat in your heart’. Yesterday, we joined the Victorian Homelessness Network (VHN) to cover the steps of Parliament in Melbourne with 6,000 origami houses. These represent just 10% of the 60,000 additional social homes that are urgently needed to meet the growing need in Victoria. Staff from our Melbourne teams got behind the campaign at an origami morning tea. The houses they folded will be on display at our head office throughout Homelessness Week (5-11 August).
