In the latest issue of Building Services Engineering, Mike Arnold, NDY's Dublin Office Director, explores the #NABERS ratings tool as a guide to minimising a building’s environmental impact through reduced energy consumption and its application at IPUT Real Estate Dublin's 25 North Wall Quay in Dublin. "NABERS UK launched in late 2020 and NABERS ratings can officially be certified there. While the certificate is valuable, it is within the methodology and associated energy savings where the real value can be uncovered." Mike also talks about where the energy saving magic really happens, "A Smart Building can work hand in hand with NABERS. Building operators and tenants are given access to an analytics portal which can reveal areas for improvement in real financial terms. This innovation provides transparency of building and tenancy operations to those paying the bills, thus providing further incentive to reduce energy use and thereby improve the NABERS Energy rating." The recent Crows Nest Metro Station community open day offered an exciting opportunity for people to get a first look at the new station before it officially opens. After delivering a range of core and specialist services for the project, our team was keen to explore the station alongside the community and see the fruits of their hard work. Engineers Robert Bartlett, Shrinivas Sapre, Joshua Mathen and Jason Zhao shared the occasion with family and friends, exploring the station in a new light (and free of hi-vis vests and hard hats). Robert, NDY’s NSW Transport Market Sector Leader and Crows Nest Metro Station project leader, reflected on the milestone, saying “it was very satisfying to see all our hard work over the last 5 years materialise into a beautiful transport facility that will benefit the local community and the whole of Sydney for generations to come. Travelling to the CBD and surrounds will be quicker and more efficient, and the public will be able to enjoy the wonderful new amenity at the station precinct. "I’m so proud of the NDY team for their dedication and achievement in completing this project. It was special standing side-by-side with my wife and some of the NDY and Crows Nest Design Consortium team members inside the station, reminiscing about how we got here.” Joshua, our NSW Fire Engineering Lead, also shared his personal experience, noting that “the open day was a great opportunity to show my wife and daughter Crows Nest Station. Whilst my 3-year-old wasn’t too impressed by the complexities of the project, the free Sydney Metro novelty pens made her day!” Thanks to Sydney Metro for opening the station and giving people a sneak peek into what they’ll soon experience on their daily commute. #MakingSpacesWork Sydney Metro | SMEC | Woods Bagot | Robert Bird Group | Slattery | OCULUS | Creative Road Art Projects | Büro North | Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea

Earlier this year, Jason Zhao, one of #NDY’s mechanical engineers, returned to his old high school, Knox Grammar School to take part in a careers insight event. Students from years 9 to 12 and their parents had the chance to explore various industries firsthand. Jason, along with other alumni, shared his journey since graduation, offering a glimpse into the world of building services engineering at NDY. The students were eager to learn, asking questions like: • What does a typical day look like for an engineer? • Which subjects should an engineer study? • How often do engineers visit site? • What qualities make a good engineer? This event was a fantastic opportunity to guide young minds on their potential career paths and allowed Jason to give back to his educational roots. Thank you to Knox Grammar School for organising such a valuable event! At NDY, we are committed to inspiring and recruiting the next generation of engineers, ensuring they have the guidance and support needed to thrive in their careers. Please reach out if you’re interested in joining NDY in your early career journey at [email protected]. #MakingSpacesWork Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea

Retrofits don’t come much better than this. London’s iconic Arding & Hobbs has been masterfully transformed from a beloved, historic department store into a prime destination for office, retail and leisure space. Throughout the project, hidden treasures were uncovered, such as a stained glass barrel roof that had been painted over. Modern features were added, including the magnificent rooftop extension reminiscent of a bronze crown. The outcome is a unified blend of historic charm with contemporary elegance. The industry is taking notice. Congratulations to W.RE, Knight Harwood, Stiff Trevillion Architects and the wider project team on Arding & Hobbs' latest nominations: ▪️ Retrofit Project of the Year at the Building Awards (Building Magazine). ▪️ Best Use of Hybrid Technology and Commercial Project of the Year at the Offsite Awards 2024. ▪️ Creative Retrofit category at the World Architecture Festival Awards. There’s no doubt this Clapham Junction beauty will continue to captivate with its stunning transformation. #MakingSpacesWork Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Hoare Lea | Glumac | Cosentini Associates
