Australia is shifting towards waste-to-energy plants, burning household waste to generate electricity. But as this practice grows, conservationists raise concerns about its impact on the environment and circular economy efforts. MSDI's Jennifer Macklin weighs in, highlighting the risk: "The waste-to-energy process – which typically involves burning non-recyclable waste in large furnaces at high temperatures to generate electricity or heat – is the “lowest value way of circulating” because the value in the materials is lost and it can also lock out 'higher order' practices like reuse and recycle." Proud to see our Chair, Professor John Thwaites, moderate a powerful discussion at the 23rd SDSN Leadership Council Meeting in New York this past week.
Chair Monash Sustainable Development Institute, ClimateWorks Centre, McKinnon Institute for Political Leadership #sdgs #climatechangepolicy
Honoured to moderate a discussion on the Summit of the Future and the future of the SDGs at the SDSN Leadership Council in New York this week with United Nations Deputy Secretary Amina Mohammed and Professor Jeffrey Sachs. The biggest barriers to achieving sustainable development and the SDGs are global conflicts, the terrible geopolitical situation and the lack of financing for developing countries. We need diplomacy for peace and reform of the international financial architecture.
