Get to know our Manager of Economic and Destination Development Tanya Lipus! 😊

View profile for Kath Harris, graphic

🔷HR Consultant & Founder of UnscriptedHR 🔷Creating great workplaces 🔷 Helping small-medium businesses unlock talent potential, ignite passion and transform employees' lives.

Loved my recent Walk on Wednesday with Tanya Lipus, Manager of Economic and Destination Development at MidCoast Council. Tanya's coming up on her one-year anniversary in the role and is really enjoying the move to the area, embracing the slower pace while making a difference in the community. Read on to learn more about Tanya’s journey and story! 🏖️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜’𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 there are lots of small achievements I am proud of and I think everyone needs to celebrate the small wins as well as the big ones. But if I had to choose one in the last few years, it would be winning a scholarship to complete by MBA at Griffith University in 2019. Then actually completing it in 2022! 🏖️𝗠𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 local government can be very rewarding and there are a lot of opportunities for progression across a variety of fields. My advice is to be pro-active and get out there and network with colleagues across the organisation and within industry. 🏖️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 you can’t know everything and that’s OK. The other valuable bit of advice I was told once was to only be loyal to yourself – this is in the context of work. Whilst I am a huge believer in work loyalty, sometimes this can be taken advantage of (I have experienced this). So, this is more about when opportunities arise, take the opportunity. 🏖️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 both parents undergoing cancer treatment, all whilst going through a divorce. This shaped my thinking and priorities, making me focus on self-care, health and family first.  🏖️𝗠𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 to set expectations up front. I don’t tolerate bad behaviour, so I will pull people up for that in a respectful way. Communicate what’s required (and what’s not) and why (purpose), do what you say you are doing to do, and most of all have fun! 🏖️𝗔 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗜’𝗺 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 more wine education. I love drinking wine, so I thought I would start to educate myself on this subject. I completed the WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines recently and I want to continue the build on this knowledge. 🏖️𝗠𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 I love exploring different cultures and learning about the history of new places. But I also enjoy relaxing by the pool with a glass of sparkling wine! 🏖️𝗠𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 career 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 my career goal is within a government context and about leading transformational change. I always want to see change for the better to improve how things are done which ultimately have a positive impact on communities. My goal is to become CEO/GM of a local government organisation, so I continue to forge my path to achieve that.
