We are One Team, One Metro.
About us
Since November 2009 Metro Trains Melbourne has been the operator of Melbourne’s growing suburban railway. Currently running more than 15,000 services a week across 16 lines, Metro is committed to creating one of the best engineered railways in the world. Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city – a city which is becoming increasingly reliant on public transport networks. Since 2009, Metro’s momentum to grow and change the network has remained steadfast, understanding it is no longer a traditional suburban railway. Adopting global best-practice across all facets of the business provides the foundation for the transformation to a high capacity and high frequency metro-style railway designed for the growing city of Melbourne. With more than 7000 team members across Victoria, we provide an environment that is rooted in honesty and integrity. Metro's team members are committed to serving our communities with the best possible services.

Every person in every role contributes to Metro’s Plan. Our senior leaders came together to hear about our goals for the year ahead. Special thanks to our frontline colleagues for sharing their thoughts about how we can deliver Metro’s Plan as One Team, One Metro. Let’s go! Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gYukCvqB

Metro has been proactive in reducing the carbon emissions associated with maintaining our trains. We’re using new technologies and improved maintenance practices to maximise the wheel life on our Siemen’s Nexas fleet, resulting in the doubling of the expected service life of the wheels. For our Siemens fleet of 72 units, this initiative will reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 1275 tonnes. Our new sustainable solution has been shortlisted for an Australasian Railway Association (ARA) ARI Sustainability Excellence Award.

Is there anything more satisfying than a newly resurfaced platform?. West Richmond’s Platform 1 is looking great after Infrastructure works over the weekend. This work required 70 tonnes of asphalt, and 30 per cent of it was from recycled materials. That means 700 glass bottles, 1750 plastic bottles and 21 tonnes of reclaimed asphalt didn’t end up in a landfill.

Our Infrastructure team recently recorded their best year ever, including removing enough graffiti to cover the MCG pitch 13 times. This is an impressive achievement not only for Metro, but also within the broader Infrastructure industry. Our team are committed to looking after and renewing our railways through hard work and innovation. Check out what’s kept them busy over the past year.

100 years ago, this was the key behind-the-scenes tool used on the railways. In 1924, a telegraph and train running office was opened in Dandenong, and this was the train control desk used to run trains in the south east. It was decommissioned years ago, and had been stored at Newport, and now we’re working with VicTrack to make sure it’ll be preserved as a part of Victorian railway history.

Over the past two and a half years, the team has recycled an impressive amount of materials, including 40,000 tonnes of ballast, 1800 tonnes of timber sleepers, 800 tonnes of asphalt, and 700 tonnes of concrete. Another innovative approach developed by the Infrastructure team uses a herd of hungry goats to clear overgrown vegetation along parts of the rail network. Congratulations to our Infrastructure Team, who have now been shortlisted for an Australasian Railway Association (ARA) ARI Sustainability Excellence Award

Our Rolling Stock colleagues recently had the opportunity to share their workplace with their loved ones through a family day at the Bayswater Train Maintenance Depot. The younger guests got the opportunity to check out a train driver’s cab after snacks and face painting. Thank you to the Depot Managers and admin staff at Bayswater for planning a successful family day.

🚆 Getting on the train at Merinda Park is now easier with 100 new commuter parking spaces and a brand new bus interchange open. 🚗🚍 🖐️ But wait, that’s not all. There are fresh safety improvements at Merinda Park as well, including CCTV, lighting and footpath upgrades, new fencing, tactile ground surfaces and shelters. New signage and information displays will help passengers make their way onto trains and out of the cold.

We remove more than 20,000 square metres of graffiti every month. That’s an area bigger than the pitch of the MCG. Last week removal specialists had to go to new heights to clean this piece of graffiti from the Flinders St Station clock tower. Thank you to our crews for restoring the most iconic building in Melbourne to its former glory. We will continue to work with Victoria Police to identify these vandals.
