We're celebrating our partnership with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation this NAIDOC Week! Together, we're keeping the fire burning with action and collaboration to care for Country and Water. "Partnerships which assist us to achieve Wadawurrung’s aspirations are vital to WTOAC. Meaningful partnerships are so important: if Wadawurrung People are the 'fire', then partners like Melbourne Water are the support that 'keep the fire burning'. They believe in and walk alongside us to support our primary role to care for Wadawurrung Country and People, it is for this commitment I say nyatne (thank you)." Aunty Mary, Wadawurrung Elder. Over the past year, we've focused on building strong relationships and sharing knowledge through on-country visits, yarns, and workshops together. Wadawurrung Culture and art have guided the design of our new Western Treatment Plant Education Centre, and we're embarking on restoring vital grassland habitats together. "Walking Country together has shown us that true partnership thrives on shared knowledge and respect," shares Vivien Allimonos, Executive General Manager for Customer Community and External Affairs. There is a lot for us to learn and unlearn but together, we are Wunggurwill Ngiitj (Strong Together). #NAIDOC2024 #KeepingTheFireBurning #PartnershipInAction #MelbourneWater #Wadawurrung #WTOAC

Rain and storms are a natural part of life in Melbourne. As our city continues to grow, increased pressure on existing infrastructures such as drains and waterways presents significant challenges. At Melbourne Water, we face the critical task of ensuring that rainfall is safely managed and carried away from built-up areas to protect our iconic rivers, creeks, and bays. We use various solutions to handle stormwater, including retarding basins, wetlands, and a network of drainage systems, each playing different roles: 🌿 Retarding basins: These structures temporarily hold back stormwater, reducing flood risks and protecting downstream areas. 🌊 Wetlands: Our wetlands naturally filter stormwater, improving water quality and providing critical habitats for wildlife. 🛠️ Drainage systems: We maintain an extensive network of drains designed to efficiently carry stormwater away from urban areas. At Melbourne Water, we take a collaborative approach to the way we plan for and manage all elements of the water cycle. We're partnering with Knox City Council, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation to transform Blind Creek and Lewis Park into a thriving community space. To showcase this transformation, which includes installation of a new shared user bridge, Melbourne Water hosted a site tour and tree-planting event with Jackson Taylor MP, Knox City Council and Friends of Blind Creek Billabong. This initiative is part of our award-winning Reimagining Your Creek Program, aimed at converting 1.65 kilometers of underground concrete drainage into natural waterways. It not only revitalises the environment but also enhances community spaces like Lewis Park, making them cooler, greener, and more bio-diverse for future generations.
