About us
The Master Plumbers Association recognises the vital role plumbing plays in developing and maintaining public health and ensuring the environmental sustainability of our communities. Established in 1891, Master Plumbers is Australia’s largest plumbing industry association. An industry leader for over 120 years, we are a trusted source of information, advice and expertise for our members, the industry, government and the community. Our large membership represents a powerful and reputable group and we lobby on behalf of members to protect and effect change to the industry and in support of various plumbing, business and environmental recommendations. Our vision is a strong, respected and sustainable plumbing industry. Our mission is to provide representation and services to support the success of our members, the future of the plumbing industry and the health of the community. Our History In 1891, 57 plumbing contractors paid a £1 subscription to enable the establishment of the Associated Master Plumbers of Victoria. The first member to pay a fee was Mr J.E. Cornochan of Jackson Street St Kilda.By 1893 the Association was recommending a course of lectures which included items such as plumber’s work and house drainage in relation to public health, bad plumbing and its prevention, evil effects of bad plumbing and drainage work and the system of sewerage as adopted by the Metropolitan Board of Works.Today, the Master Plumbers Association has over 900 active members accessing information, advice and training.

One of the most common non-compliances found by VBA Plumbing Auditors is the installation of gas cooking appliances and the required clearances to rangehoods. New installations must have a 650mm minimum distance from the supporting surface for the cooking vessels of the gas cooking appliance to the lowest part of the rangehood (unless the manufacturer installation instructions require a greater distance) and 750mm to the lowest part of the exhaust fan. For existing installations requiring replacement, the highest part of the highest burner or hob should have a minimum clearance of 600 mm from the lowest part of the rangehood, unless the manufacturer's installation instructions specify a greater distance. It's been a whirlwind of a week in the United Kingdom while we partake in a Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia study tour to learn best practices in the plumbing industry. Last Tuesday we participated in a factory tour of Built Environment - Smarter Transformation in Glasgow. Formally Construction Scotland Innovation Centre, BE-ST describe themselves as the launchpad to a zero carbon built environment. I really enjoyed the tour, delivered by Matthew Paton, and was particularly interested in insights surrounding site safety utilising the use of robots and exoskeletons. BE-ST are doing some incredible research and implementation of digital fabrication, construction waste reduction and using local under-utilised materials and waste products to transform them into sustainable building materials. Thanks again to Matthew and also Rebecca Wilson for arranging the tour for David and myself. #masterplumbers #wyliescholarship #zerocarbon #sustainableconstruction #plumbing

It was a great start to our UK Study tour as the recipients of the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia Wylie Trust Scholarship. Our first stop was a visit to the Built Environment - Smarter Transformation centre in Glasgow, Scotland. It was a great insight into innovation and collaboration taking place within the UK’s construction industry. From start-ups to larger building companies all working under the one roof to test and collaborate on exciting products to achieve less wastage, utilise recycled goods and train future technicians through CPD. A big thanks to Matthew Paton, Impact Manager at BE-ST for the tour. #masterplumbers #wyliescholarship

Master Plumbers members had the opportunity to discuss key federal and state concerns today with Federal Member for Wannon, Hon. Dan Tehan MP.
Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia members met with Dan Tehan MP today in Hamilton to discuss first-hand issues experienced by our regional plumbing business members. Thanks to Finchetts (Mick King) and our Councilors Grant Donald and Tim Wilken for hosting. Training more plumbing apprentices, employer incentives, the cost of doing business and the rushed gas transition all featured as key topics. Further discussion in August on migration issues when we meet with Dan in Canberra in his capacity as shadow minister.
