Philanthropy

A collective of Australian funders supporting a stronger democracy and a fairer Australia.

About us

Mannifera is a collective of Australian funders backing civil society organisations advocating for the systems change we need to strengthen our democracy and build an economy that works for everyone. Our vision is of a more complete democracy and an economy with fairness at its heart, protected by a robust and vibrant civil society sector. Since our inception in 2019, we’ve grown to 24 members and have delivered over $3.5 million in grants to 50 civil society and First Nations-led organisations. We’ve also convened over 70 events, helping to foster shared learning and build a more connected civil society and philanthropic movement. As a collective we are committed to listening to and learning from First Nations perspectives on the state of our democracy and economy, and we have worked to build a First Nations-led approach into our practice by having First Nations advisors guide our granting to First Nations-led solutions.

With just one day to go until polls close across the United States, the outcome of the presidential race remains a 'toss up' according to most polls. It's a moment in history we are watching closely; for what it's telling us about (among many things) the drivers of democratic participation, the role of leadership, and the design and influence of democratic institutions. To unpack how things are landing and better understand 'where to from here?', we will be hosting a debrief with Mannifera member Deanne Weir and expert panelists Sharan Burrow, Licia Heath and Professor Brendon O'Connor on Thursday 7 November (12pm - 1pm AEDT). Once upon a time (well up until 2 weeks ago) if you wanted to know who was gifting things to our federal politicians, it was an onerous task that quite frankly no one would have time to do. But now thanks to the ingenuity and persistence of Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) and Alliance for Gambling Reform, they have developed (in the words of Caterina Giorgi) the "Influence Engine that could" - allowing anyone to discover the gifts (over $300) received by parliamentarians in a matter of seconds. Mannifera is thrilled to have had the opportunity to fund the work that brought the Influence Engine to life - which achieves greater transparency, and hopefully accountability of our elected representatives to the people they serve. Try it out for yourself - just type in any industry or related words, company or organisation, and see what pops up. For instance, seeing the number of politicians who regularly attend major sporting events (grand finals, Melbourne Cup, Australian Open) as guests of gambling and alcohol companies seems completely unnecessary and sends all the wrong signals - surely they can buy their own tickets like the rest of us? We look forward to seeing the power of this engine grow- telling us the full story of who is influencing our politicians and for whose benefit. https://lnkd.in/gTgNSz9z

One in four federal politicians have received a gift from an alcohol company or lobby group, and one and seven have received a gift from a gambling company. Gifts are usually tickets to a sporting event like the Australian Open and Melbourne Cup. What these companies are actually buying is access. We’ve discovered this using the Influence Engine. Together with the Alliance for Gambling Reform and with funding support from Mannifera we’ve developed the Influence Engine. It’s a platform that allows people to search the register of interest using any term. To have a strong democracy we need transparency. We need to understand how decisions are made, whose influencing them and whose benefiting from them. There are many ways that companies and lobby groups influence decision-makers. They do this through political donations and meetings. They do this through the revolving door from political staffers to lobby groups to corporations and back again. They also do this by buying gifts and access. When politicians are purchased gifts, tickets to a sporting event and when they buy shares in a company, they must disclose this in the register of interests if it is over the value of $300. For a long time, the register has been a data source that’s been difficult to search because the information contained within it is provided within individual PDFs. The Influence Engine helps to overcome this. Tools like this help to strengthen our democracy by shining a lot on spaces that otherwise would’ve been dark you can access the influence engine here 👇🏽

We are proud to be supporting this work by Human Rights Law Centre and to see collaboration occurring across the democracy sector to tackle the root causes of dis and misinformation at this critical time. A strong democracy is essential to protecting so many of our fundamental human rights, and we cannot have a healthy democracy without robust and fact-based dialogue. 🚨 Our new report out now! 🚨The Human Rights Law Centre is calling on the Albanese Government to stop big tech regulating itself, while harmful misinformation and disinformation poisons our democracy. Our report outlines why, and how this must be done.  Technology should serve our communities, not put us at risk. But from fake election claims, to dangerous health myths, and hate speech that stokes violence, the spread of misinformation and disinformation is poisoning Australia’s democracy and our communities. https://lnkd.in/gmxvDzY6

Thankful for the incredible work of our civil society partner Equality Australia and the great coalition of advocates and community voices that won this reversal to include the census questions that capture important data on our LGBTIQ community members. 🙌🏼 🌈 📊 🙏

Huge news! The government has announced today that trans and gender diverse people will be counted in the next census. There will also be a question on sexual orientation. This is a huge testament to everyone who spoke up, kept the pressure on and helped the next census count more of us, properly. Being counted is about being seen and about being heard. Unfortunately, people with innate variations of sex characteristics, or intersex people, won't be counted in the next census. The ABS did not recommend this question due to the testing results. We will keep working in support of intersex organisations for full inclusion into the future.

This conversation between Mannifera members Jill Reichstein OAM and Jemima Myer surfaced some great insights about philanthropy for systems change that we very much live by at Mannifera: 1. Creating social change requires political engagement because it’s often the policies governing our lives that are creating inequities or driving injustice 2. Philanthropy is most successful when funders can build meaningful relationships with their grant partners 3. Effective philanthropy requires collaboration and long-term commitments As Jill says so eloquently, "By elevating the voices of those with direct experience of the issues we seek to solve and focusing on systemic change, I believe that funders can begin to address the inherent paradoxes of philanthropy and contribute meaningfully to social progress." "I urge the next generation of philanthropists to continue resourcing groups that are using advocacy as a tool to tackle systemic issues. While we can’t predict what new social issues future changes in government may bring, a strong and vibrant civil society sector will always be needed to hold power to account."
