Since 1936, Lort Smith has been here for Melbourne’s pets and their people – not for profit.

About us

Lort Smith, Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital, has been an integral part of Melbourne’s compassionate community since 1936. As proud Melburnians, we understand the significance of a cohesive society which places a high value on the health, wellbeing, and safety of both our citizens and their beloved pets. To help facilitate this our purpose is clear: We believe pets and their people should be put before profits. Our commitment to providing veterinary care to animals in need has not only helped shape the landscape of pet welfare in Melbourne, but also reinforced the bond that defines our great city. As a result, our not for profit Animal Hospital means that people with more, can help their fellow Melburnians who may be less fortunate. And bring people together over a shared love of their animals. Lort Smith staff and volunteers strive every day to be the animal hospital all of Melbourne truly admires and is proud of. 🎉🐾 Grand Re-Opening of Lort Smith Animal Hospital 🐾🎉 This week, as we celebrated International Women's Day, we re-opened our newly upgraded site in North Melbourne. This is a dream turned reality by a compassionate Melbourne woman, Louisa Lort Smith, who founded our organisation in 1936 for the well-being of pets and their people in our community. Our journey to this momentous day has been filled with incredible support, and we'd like to extend a special thanks to Building Engineering. Their exceptional team didn't just construct the next generation of this Melbourne icon; they also made a generous donation, ensuring we continue to keep pets and their beloved owners together. 💪 Led by Inspiring Women 💪 In the spirit of this week's celebration, it's noteworthy that a group of strong, determined women led our team of builders, including team leader Sophie Goodman. They've played a pivotal role in shaping the future of veterinary care in Melbourne, paving the way for a facility that promises exceptional care. We're immensely grateful for everyone's support and excited to start this new chapter. Together, we're committed to making a difference in the lives of Melbourne’s pets and their people. Thank you for your continued support. #LortSmithAnimalHospital #GrandOpening #Melbourne #VeterinaryCare #BuildingEngineering #InternationalWomensDay #CommunitySupport

Yesterday we were thrilled to host a Merlyn’s Circle event to celebrate the positive impact made by Melbourne women in the 20th Century.   Over lunch, our families heard from Jennifer Fleming, CEO of Lort Smith, Samantha Baillieu AM, Chair of Yulgilbar and Jemima Myer, Director of the Myer Foundation and Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre.   What a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the stories of these great women and learn more about how their minds and hearts have collectively brought change to our community. Lort Smith recently launched the 'Pet Therapy for At-Risk Young People Project Evaluation Report' – which found that Pet Therapy, a form of animal assisted intervention, can be used by practitioners and educators to create safety and improve connection and capacity for young people. The event was an opportunity to acknowledge our project partners and participants and to celebrate Pet Therapy as a unique and transformational tool to support meaningful engagement in educational and therapeutic supports and interventions. Across the 'Pet Therapy for At-Risk Young People' project, Lort Smith worked with specialist youth services to deliver Pet Therapy to some of Victoria’s most vulnerable young people in justice, secure care, flexible education, residential housing, mental health and AOD settings. Young participants included those with early experiences of trauma, child protection and out-of-home care; disrupted education; unsafe or unstable housing and home environments; alcohol and drug misuse; mental illness; and involvement with the justice system. The benefits young people and the services that support them experienced were overwhelmingly positive and, at times, profound. You can read our project evaluation report here: https://bit.ly/48eeC5B We invite you to share the report and our findings across your networks. Lort Smith is committed to continuing to create a positive impact for young people and is currently seeking opportunities for new partnerships and ongoing funding to deliver and expand youth Pet Therapy programs. If you are interested in partnering with us, please get in touch with our Pet Therapy team at [email protected] Thank you to our hosts at Free to Feed in Fitzroy North for providing a wonderful space for our launch event.

In an essential milestone for pet welfare in Victoria, Acting Minister for Agriculture Harriet Shing recently visited our Campbellfield site to unveil the findings from the Pet Census. Some interesting key findings include: - 58% of adults in Victoria own pets. - Dogs and cats make up most of the pets found in the home, with 41% dogs and 24% cats. - Pet diversity is increasing, with 6% of households owning exotic pets like small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish. - Approximately $1.8 billion was spent on veterinary services and medicines, highlighting the community’s commitment to animal health. 🐶 A visit from Santa’s little furball is the pawfect way to unleash festive cheer. 🎅🏾 It was a treat to have Leo, the cavoodle, and his handler Lynette visit Sunshine Hospital this week. Patients, staff and volunteers stopped for a pat and Leo happily posed for puparazzi pictures. Leo is one of the Lort Smith Animal Hospital Pet Therapy Dogs that visits health services across Melbourne to boost the wellbeing of staff, patients, volunteers and visitors. 😄 It's been a pleasure to see lots of our furry friends visiting our sites this week!

Congratulations to Dr Danae Noitakis, the recipient of the 2023 Alan Lawther Scholarship, which she has used to complete her membership in surgery.    Lort Smith Animal Hospital offers this donor-funded scholarship in honour of Dr Alan Lawther, an esteemed veterinarian of Lort Smith and highly hands-on during our hospital redevelopment in 1999. The scholarship is awarded annually to support a Lort Smith vet in advancing their qualifications.   We are proud to have Dr Danae on our team. #veterinarian #scholarship #award #2023 #congratulations #lortsmithcare #lortsmith #petcare #animalcare #animalhospital #surgery
