We’re using the world’s smallest organisms to solve the world’s biggest problems.
About us
Loam works with 4.5 billion years of evolution to solve the climate crisis. Microbes have changed the composition of our atmosphere through earth’s history. At Loam, we are ensuring these organisms can do it again. Through a better understanding of how microbes influence the carbon cycle, we can create new planetary-scale opportunities for carbon sequestration and improve agricultural productivity.

Profit & Legacy … …these are the prime motivators on a farm. What will you leave behind you for the next generation whilst you are making a living today. Listen to the Mayor of Parkes, local farmer and good friend Neil Westcott eloquently describe how a soil carbon project serves both. Profit and legacy working together… as it should be! https://lnkd.in/gr7nkmYq

Orange is the new White House He’s served as President Barack Obama’s Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition Policy, executive director for First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, and as an assistant chef in the White House… Now US chef-news personality-turned-investor Sam Kass is biting into his next big project. Sam is investor and advisor for Australian ag biotech Loam Bio, an Orange-headquartered startup that has developed a world-first fungal inoculant that takes carbon from the atmosphere where it’s a problem and stores it in the soil where it improves yields and environmental outcomes. Amazing to have Sam zoom into Loam’s conference in Orange all the way from the US - not an easy gig to hold the attention of an entire room but we couldn’t not be captivated by his story of walking into the White House as a young (27!) idealistic visionary and swiftly realising its easy to be a critic, but reality hits hard when you’re tasked with making meaningful change. One of the big takeaway for me was Sam’s point that inclusion is fundamental to moving the needle. When conservative voices and future thinkers have a seat at the table - that’s when real progress happens. Such a privilege to hear so many shape-shifting insights from the world’s best agronomists, scientists, microbiologists, and farmers at Loam’s inaugural conference. Congrats to all involved - bring on day two🍄🟫 #sustainability #integrity #carbon #farmer #carbonproject #transition

How is stable carbon actually measured? 🔬 This is a question asked often when it comes to understanding the stabilisation of carbon in our farming soils 🚜 Loam has worked with leading researchers across the world to integrate a robust way of measuring the carbon pools into our R&D program. Density fractionation is used to separate particulate organic matter, aggregate carbon and mineral associated pools. These pools represent varying levels of stability in our agricultural soils 🌱 These pools are then processed via dry combustion carbon analysis at 1600 degrees celsius to measure the exact amount of carbon contained in each. In Loam’s trials, this analysis is carried out over a time scale to see how the carbon stabilisation compared to baselines 🧫 Read more about this measurement of carbon in the paper by Stuart et al.

Leading researchers from the Western Sydney University announced results from their latest studies with Loam Bio demonstrating how fungi can increase soil carbon and its stability 🔬 This research demonstrates that certain native Australian fungi have the potential to increase carbon sequestration in soil and enhance the stability of soil carbon 🧫 https://lnkd.in/gKhyDy_e

Loam Australia’s field trials planting season is coming to a close. 🚜 The team planted over 40 small-plot replicated field trials across 4 states for the 2024 winter season. With the requirements of intensive soil sampling within each plot at every location, this is no small feat! A big well done to the Loam team, and Loam’s trial collaborators for another big year of trials planted across the country 🌱 Kalyx Australia Narelle Moore Lara Vallejo Roosdorp
