It was a pleasure interviewing JJ Fiasson about Canva's aquisition of his generative AI startup Leonardo.Ai. I'm particularly interested in the idea that, with Canva already used by almost 200 million people globally, does embedding Leonardo.Ai's tech in it's software mean Australia has a leading gen AI company to compete against the likes of leading tech company well ahead in the development of gen AI models and platforms. To that, Fiasson humbly replied: "Canva has already done some awesome stuff with respect to generative AI and we have made our mark as well. I definitely think the two companies joining forces will take that to new levels. There's [also] this ‘democratisation’ element in terms of leveraging generative AI within larger platforms like Canva, especially platforms that have a generous ‘freemium’ model." In our interview we also discuss how gen AI is impacting traditional art, and the evolution of the use of technology in the creative process.
