In the past 75 years, John Holland has been fortunate to call so many talented people employees. It's the decades of hard work, engineering prowess and loyalty from so many that has created the strength and capability across complex construction disciplines which is helping to leave our legacy in communities across Australia. Scott 'Scoota' Edwards is one of those people. As a young carpenter / formsetter in 1996, he started his journey with John Holland on Queensland's Boyne Island Aluminium Smelter expansion. That was an eight-week job that turned into the past 28 years and just as many projects with us - and little did he know he'd build his namesake on one of them. It was on the Brisbane Water Enviro Alliance Project in 2004 that his team built the world-first intricate concrete structure that became known as a SCOOTA - the Sandgate Circular Outside Oxidation Tank Arrangement that marks his favourite career achievement yet. From Supervisor on several water projects, Scoota is now Superintendent on Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3. "I've worked on mine sites, water treatment upgrades, Inland Rail, the Broken Hill water pipeline, and even a stint in Thailand looking after a precast concrete yard," he said. "I've worked alongside so many smart people and made some really good friends and I hope there's more to come!" #ItsAJohnHollandJob #JohnHollandTransformingLives #JohnHolland75 #JHPastPresentFuture

Did you know the Botany Rail Duplication project will help ARTC and train operators deliver an 80 per cent increase in container freight to Sydney's Port Botany over the next 12 years? As the delivery partner on the completed project, we built a second 2.9km rail line, demolished obsolete assets, installed new signalling infrastructure and constructed four new underbridges - all delivered in a very busy traffic corridor alongside Sydney Airport. This operating environment led to an innovative construction method for the bridges, utilising a girder sliding formwork that has pioneered this approach in heavily trafficked areas. It's this kind of innovation in construction that's recognised by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Awards - with the Botany Rail Duplication Project named as Finalist in the Infrastructure Project Excellence category. Fingers crossed when the winners are announced on 7 August. #JohnHollandRailAndTransport #ItsAJohnHollandJob #JohnHollandTransformingLives

The John Holland team recently hosted UNSW Construction Management students on Women in Construction site tours at the Sydney Children’s Hospital project in Randwick. 🏥We shared information about the coordination of all the works, innovative logistics solutions, building services and unique elements over nine of the 12 levels of the Sydney Children’s Hospital project build. 🏗️ The Women in Construction site tour program was developed after conducting a survey with UNSW students earlier this year. 👷🏽♀️It aims to supplement university studies with learning about the real-world application of building services, site management and project coordination. 👷♀️Our team has also expanded the program to include site tours with high school students and community-based organisations with women interested in entering the construction industry. We look forward to hosting more students in the future - who can add to the album of rooftop selfies! 🤩

"You need to be flexible, stick together and be prepared for anything in this business!" It's this approach that's helped Shoalhaven Hospital Site Manager Chris Sykes enjoy a twenty-year career with John Holland. From a first-year apprentice carpenter working on Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in 2004, to becoming a site manager now leading a team of 20 direct reports and 350 subcontractors on the Shoalhaven Hospital - Chris says being open to opportunities has been the key to his success. He recalls being given his first project to run as a sub-foreman and wondered whether he'd bitten off more than he could chew. "It was a small job by our standards, a $10 million carpark but in taking it on I had the feeling of 'this is my responsibility'. "So I broke things down into bit-sized pieces, took a deep breath and applied what I'd learned." And that includes lessons from leaders he's admired. "I've worked for leaders who've backed me and demonstrated you've got to understand the people you're working with as much as the building." And it's a mindset that's clearly working. If you’re familiar with our 75-year legacy, you’ll know that tunnelling on complex projects is something we pride ourselves on. It’s a unique skillset that’s helped us deliver some of the nation’s biggest and most iconic rail projects. Back in 1972, we used a giant boring machine known as ‘The Mole’ to complete the first phase of tunnelling for the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop – later known as the City Loop. Flash-forward more than half a century, and we’re helping to deliver the city-shaping Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project, which will open to passengers next year. Our tunnelling capabilities have also been instrumental in delivering the likes of Sydney Metro and taking on the evolving energy sector with our underground cavern works for pumped hydro energy generation. #JohnHollandTunnelling #JohnHollandTransformingLives #ItsAJohnHollandJob #JohnHolland75 #JHPastPresentFuture

These giant smiles match those of our Adelaide Trams team whose Community Safety program 'Our Giants' is a finalist in the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Awards in the Keeping Communities Safe Around Rail category! Sponsored by the TrackSAFE Foundation this award recognises innovative programs that improve community safety through awareness and education. The “Tram Safety, Our Giants” campaign educates children in particular about tram safety protocols and hazards, safe boarding, alighting and behaviour on the Adelaide tram network. Its key message? That trams are big, move rapidly and can’t manoeuvre easily, helped by colourful artwork and one liners including: 🚋 “Our Giants can’t swerve.” 🚋 “Our Giants can’t stop quickly.” 🚋"Our Giants can travel in pairs.” 🚋 “Look out! Our giants move quietly.” We wish the team luck when ARI Awards winners are announced on August 7. #ARIAwards #JohnHollandRailAndTransport #AdelaideTramsNetwork
