Congratulations to the winners of the 2024 Minister’s Awards for Urban Design! Organised by the Office of the Queensland Government Architect, these awards celebrate the pivotal role of leading architects, landscape architects and planners in developing the culture, sustainability, and economy of our state. There were two winners of the Minister’s Award for Urban Design in 2024. Heritage Lanes by Woods Bagot and ASPECT with Mirvac is a landmark development that links Turbot and Ann Streets in the Brisbane CBD to allow more ways for people to access and enjoy the city. The Nicholas Street Precinct was delivered by the Ipswich City Council with The Buchan Group, Inc, Vee Design, Bornhorst Ward, WSP, Strategic Spaces, Savills, Ranbury, RLB Rider Levett Bucknall and Hutchinson Builders. It’s the largest transformation of Ipswich’s city heart in three decades, and has created a vibrant, inclusive hub for the community. The Nicholas Street Precinct also received the Movement and Place Award, which celebrates projects that successfully integrate transport and movement outcomes to deliver high-quality places that maximise social and economic benefits for communities across Queensland. The Malcolm Middleton Award for Outstanding Liveable Design was presented to the Mari-Mari-Ba Affordable Housing Project – a successful reimagining of the old Joyce Wilding Hostel that embodies passive design principles, excellent physical and cultural accessibility, and a carefully consulted integrated art program. The Mari-Mari-Ba precinct will provide accommodation for First Nations women and children facing homelessness – it was delivered by Deicke Richards with EDGE Consulting Engineers, JHA Consulting Engineers, ACOR Consultants, Place Design Group, Stantec, Coastline Certification, Litoria Consulting and the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works. This was an exceptional year for entries – congratulations to our winners and all the commended projects!
