October is National Safe Work Month, and we’re shining the spotlight on our updated Health & Safety Strategy! We want to ensure all of our people understand the strategic approach we take to keeping people safe, and we’ve made significant progress in this regard over recent years. Our updated Group Health and Safety Strategy for 2025 – 2028 continues to evolve our approach to keeping people safe, in line with our Group objective of ‘Continue to build a safe and inclusive workplace’. The strategy is underpinned by four key results areas - Leadership, Learning, Communication and Critical Risk. In addition to our four key result areas, we continue to have a ‘Safety First’ vision, centred around our SAFE (Simple, Accountable, Focus, Everytime) Commitments. We all have a role to play in keeping people safe. You can learn more about our approach to safety, health and wellbeing at our Sustainability Hub: https://lnkd.in/g9pvENYY #NationalSafeWorkMonth #WorkplaceSafety

We’re excited to announce we will be installing a community battery on Hudson St, Coburg, VIC. The community battery, which will be installed in the coming months, will help stabilise the electricity grid while enabling more homes to install rooftop solar. The community battery will store energy, often soaking up power generated by rooftop solar during the day. The energy will then be shared with nearby homes and businesses through their existing electricity supply, this will often occur in the evening when there is more demand on the electricity grid. Homes and businesses on the same low-voltage network as the community battery will automatically access the energy it stores through their existing electricity supply. There is no sign-up process required. This is one of four community batteries Jemena will be installing within its electricity network as part of the Australian Government’s Community Batteries for Household Solar Program. For more info on Jemena’s community battery rollout visit: https://lnkd.in/gbfCPy7F

This year, we wanted to focus our 2024 Community Grants Program on helping address disadvantage in the communities where we operate. And of course, one of the biggest ways we can help address that is by helping make sure vulnerable people have access to nutritious meals. This year, out of our 12 grants, we’re proud to be supporting six food assistance programs across communities where we operate in New South Wales and Melbourne, with community organisations using our funding to buy commercial-grade kitchen equipment, pantry staples, or to make more than 5000 meals for people in need… Congratulations to these worthy organisations, supporting members of our community through tough times: NSW – NourishED (Lake Macquarie), Lifeline South Coast (Wollongong), Vivability Limited (Bathurst), Georges River Life Care (Peakhurst, Sydney) Melbourne – Alex Makes Meals Group LTD. (Preston), 300 Blankets (Braybrook) Read more about these great programs, and our other grant recipients, on our website at: https://lnkd.in/gUUJwUJr

Last month we were excited to sponsor Michelago Public School’s leadership camp for their grade five and six students! The students spent a memorable five nights sleeping under the stars, visiting Uluru, Kings Canyon and other areas around the NT to expand their knowledge of Australia’s land and culture. Michelago is a town in NSW, around 50km south of Canberra. Jemena’s Eastern Gas Pipeline runs through this region and we have a team based in the area to support the pipeline’s operations. This sponsorship was part of Jemena’s community program where we proudly sponsor and donate to a range of not-for-profit and community organisations that support people living in the communities where we operate.

We’re excited to make information about the possibilities of renewable gas available in Mandarin as part of our commitment to our culturally and linguistically diverse customers in the Jemena Gas Network area. When we look at the big picture, we know that gas isn’t just helping the energy transition, it’s in transition itself. Renewable gases like biomethane and renewable hydrogen are being demonstrated and developed around the country, and already being used successfully overseas. Check out the translated video below and visit https://lnkd.in/g2mi_gH5 (also available to view in Mandarin) to learn more about how we’re finding big opportunities, more options, more solutions, and more ways to support the energy transition. #RenewableGas #TheFutureOfGas

Supporting Sunbury community organisations… From supporting seniors in Sunbury to attend social events, to juniors playing softball – we’re pleased to be funding community groups in the northernmost part of our Jemena Electricity Network. This year, we provided a Jemena Community Grant to Sunbury Senior Citizens for taxis and ride share services so older people in their community who no longer drive can maintain their all-important social connections. We’re also proud to support the Sunbury Softball Association to run its league this year – helping provide a low-cost way for kids and young people to access sport in the area. These are just two of our amazing community grants recipients helping people in the communities where we operate – for the full list, go to: https://lnkd.in/gUUJwUJr

Currently around 18 percent of homes and business across the Jemena Electricity Network have rooftop solar installed. But by 2035, we expect this number to grow to around 32 percent. Jemena will soon begin rolling out a new voltage management technology across our electricity network in Melbourne’s north-west that will allow more homes and business to install rooftop solar without causing voltage issues or experiencing limits to the amount of excess electricity they can export back into the grid. Our team recently wrapped up a successful trial of this technology which demonstrated that the technology could maintain electricity supply voltages within regulated limits when faced with voltage fluctuations caused by growth of renewable energy such as rooftop solar. This is an important part of our work to prepare our electricity network for the future by allowing more renewable energy, such as rooftop solar, to connect to our network. It will also help improve the overall reliability of our network in the long-term. For more information visit https://lnkd.in/guZxqaNC

Well done to Monash University student Kiara Zammit, who is the worthy recipient of the 2024 Jemena Industry Leader Scholarship 👏 👏 👏 The scholarship, which was the second awarded as part of a five-year partnership between Jemena and Monash University, sees an annual scholarship awarded to a Monash University woman engineering student. We hope that awarding this annual scholarship will help our organisation play a role in the continued path to gender equity in engineering, in what has been traditionally a male-dominated industry. Kiara toured our control room in Melbourne recently, meeting our electrical engineering team and learning more about how we working towards the future of energy. Over the coming years, there will be major changes happening across the energy industry. Electrical engineers have a pivotal role to play in our net-zero future and ensuring we have diverse representation at the table is extremely important. This year, we hired 21 graduates for our 2024 program, and 66 percent of them were women. Congratulations again Kiara!
