We’ve been out a few times as part of Ener-G Management Group’s Solar Microgrid Project to yarn about and answer any questions the mob here have about how it works. Alinga energy kicking goals as expected. They are one of the only experts in First Nations Renewable Energy in the country, and led by the impressive and inspiring Ruby Heard. IEA has a long and strong relationship with Alinga, we both have been forging a path with the industry while ensuring communities are not left behind. Collectively we must support the growth of organisations like Alinga as this is the key to generational benefit for First Nations people, and to First Nations people shaping their energy futures. This means you, yes you, reaching out to Ruby and the team, and making commitments that will ensure Alinga achieves its purpose, and is staffed by a multitude of Indigenous renewable engineers and other technical experts.

First Nations people's rights and interests are vital to Australia's clean energy future. As the transition to clean energy speeds up, including First Nations communities is more important than ever. This morning, a new report was launched at Parliament House, Canberra. SGS Economics and Planning, as part of a research consortium led by the University of Technology Sydney for the First Nations Clean Energy Network, explored how to create jobs in the clean energy sector that meet the needs and expectations of First Nations people. Our findings show that the clean energy transition is a major opportunity to design a more inclusive economic system, recognising First Nations communities' vital contributions and potential. Last week some of the team attended the Smart Energy Conference and Community Energy Congress on Gadigal Country in Sydney⚡️ Some key take-aways for the team were: ▪️The clean energy industry needs a culture shift in the way it employs people ▪️Many new technological applications can greatly contribute to energy equity such as micro grids, community batteries, energy management systems and vehicle to grid configurations ▪️First Nations workforce statistics align with the industry’s need for workers and with Aboriginal communities’ need to stay on Country. This alignment presents a huge opportunity to meet place-based demand for regional energy projects ▪️Letting go of zero-sum thinking and reframing the challenge as a huge opportunity to deliver generational change is critical Thanks to the Gadigal mob, Smart Energy Council and C4CE - Coalition for Community Energy for having us. 👏🏽

This week we’ve been out on Wiradjuri Country yarning with community in the Central West Orana region. We’ve heard stories of success and challenges, as well as important learnings that will contribute to their vision for the future of their Country. This wasn’t just talk though, it’s the beginning of a coalition of community, industry, and government coming together to produce generational electrons, and the outcomes from this work will hopefully become a blueprint we see across the nation. As always we’re building relationships not infrastructure, and the last couple of days have rung true to that, with many yarns throughout the Central West and regional NSW, around how energy can unlock the outcomes communities have been pursuing for years. Wehelped facilitate the workshops alongside Adam West, Chris Briggs & Keiyana Guihot. Aunty Kerry-Ann Stanley added at the conclusion of day 1 “this is a step in the right direction” ✊🏽

We’d like to welcome Badimia & Narungga man, Tommy Hicks to the IEA team as Region Manager for SA, WA and NT. Tommy comes to us with a breadth of experience across education, food security and service design. He’s passionate about equitable responses and bridging the gap between mob, industry and government to put community in the drivers seat of their own future. “Looking forward to getting out on the road and seeing how we might support communities to be empowered through infrastructure projects and beyond”

Yesterday we attended Clean Energy Council’s launch of their First Nations Guidelines, a project with KPMG & First Nations Clean Energy Network. The principles that rang true for us were around protecting Country & cultural heritage, ensuring economic benefits are shared amongst community and developing mechanisms to track and report on community’s needs across the life of a project. A good step towards embedding community perspective on successful projects across industry. Well done team 👏🏽
