🔊 2025 VCE History Conference: Call for workshop proposals🔊 📆 Conference Date: Friday, 21 February 2025 📌 Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, Victoria The VCE History Conference attracts over 300 delegates for an enriching professional learning and collegial networking day. The VCE History Conference offers delegates professional learning in content knowledge (what we teach) and content pedagogical knowledge (effective ways to teach and assess our subjects). We would be delighted to receive your workshop proposal in either or both areas. Developing teachers’ content knowledge: these workshops provide conference delegates with the opportunity to enhance their own knowledge of history and further ignite their passion for their chosen history subject. These workshops are not necessarily focussed on classroom ideas but must relate directly to history that is covered in the VCE curriculum. 📢 History Teaching Masterclass: Every Teacher and Student Can Understand Historical Interpretations!📢 Working with historical interpretations is not about inserting ‘quotes’ into an essay. It is about understanding why two historians can examine the same event or even the same source and draw different meanings from it. To illustrate this in a memorable way, HTAV has invited two historians to discuss a single source. They will talk about the prior knowledge, interests and beliefs they brought to reading the source, and explain the basis of their agreements and disagreements about what it says and why it is historically significant. They will also discuss how the process of ‘contesting historical interpretations’ is understood by historians, and the importance of respectful discussions with people who disagree with us. We are excited to announce our next Making Public Histories online webinar! This webinar, taking place on Thursday 26 September, brings together three esteemed speakers to share approaches to our theme of "Oral History, Migration, Generation", co-presented by Old Treasury Building and Monash University Publishing. Associate Professor Francesco Ricatti is Associate Professor of Italian Studies at the The Australian National University University, where he is also the Deputy Head of the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics. He is a former Deputy and Acting Director of the Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre, and a former President of Oral History Victoria. His research focuses of migration history, transcultural studies, migrant/Indigenous relations, and creative and participatory approaches to the study of multiethnic communities. He will speak on "Migrants’ oral histories: key challenges and innovative approaches". Dr Alexandra Dellios is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies at the Australian National University. Her latest book is Heritage Making and Migrant Subjects in the Deindustrialising Region of the Latrobe Valley (Cambridge University Press, 2022). She will speak on "Oral histories about migrant welfare scandals: the challenges of multicultural frames of remembrance". Professor Tanya Evans is a Professor of History at Macquarie University in Sydney Australia. She directs the Centre for Applied History and is President of the International Federation of Public History. Her research interests include family history, memory and life-stories, public history, oral history, cultural heritage, history and sport, community, local and regional history, histories of charities and NGOs, history and the media and history in tourism.
