Gurit is participating in a panel discussion at SUSMATx, a technical conference in Girona, Spain, with a focus on sustainable matrices for structural composites. The irreversible nature of the thermoset matrices used in most current structural composites is responsible for their non-sustainable character. Work is being undertaken by numerous organizations and collectives to find sustainable alternatives, all of which pose manufacturing challenges and have performance limitations. SUSMATx will bring chemistry, materials science and mechanical engineering researchers together to facilitate scientific exchange and create a network of people with a common interest. “I’m excited to take part in the SUSMATx panel discussion, exchanging ideas with key stakeholders in resin development and composite applications. It’s critical to capture the needs of actors throughout the composite recycling supply chain. This provides an ideal opportunity to disseminate the progress Gurit is making with our circularity initiatives. I plan to share Gurit’s involvement with the EU Horizon “Repoxyble” recycling project, and the different approaches and collaboration required to address long lifecycle composite structures compared to single-use plastic recycling.” Paul Spencer, Head of Technology

Hamilton Island Race Week is Australia’s largest offshore sailing regatta held in the stunning Whitsundays last week – the 2024 edition attracted 2000 sailors, volunteers and shore crew for fantastic celebration of sailing and talent. Our Gurit colleagues joined their local Iwi-business community project ‘Restoring Rosedale Park’ in Auckland, aiming to restore and remove pests that are a threat to native species in New Zealand. OPTICORE PLATFORM INNOVATION PROJECT: OPTIMIZING THE CORE KIT DESIGN FOR WIND TURBINE BLADES 🍃👏 In #OptiCore, the partners are working on an innovative design platform optimizing the core kit design for wind turbine blades. The software provided by Gurit uses advanced algorithms to evaluate thousands of design possibilities, consindering factors like the amount of material used, how well it fits the mould, resin flow, and the mechanical properties of the final product. The software then selects the lightest design that still meets all the necessary strength and infusion requirements. This leads to benefits such as lower manufacturing costs, improved blade weight and optimal structural performance. The reduced blade weight allows a 2% extended blade length corresponding to a 4% increase in swept area and increase of annual energy. The software has already been rigorously tested and proven effective on real full-scale blades. 💬 “As the wind industry faces the need for unprecedented growth required to meet the world’s climate commitments, fully harnessing the power of digitalization and advanced computing is the way forward.
