Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of celebrating our cheque handover with Vision Australia, Royal Canin, Zoetis and Greencross Pet Wellness Company. We’re incredibly proud to have raised a record-breaking $1,359,755 for Seeing Eye Dogs Australia to help train-up another 27 Seeing Eye Dogs for Australians who are blind or have low vision. Over the last 11 years, the Petbarn Foundation Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal has now funded a total of 179 Seeing Eye Dogs! A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible—together, we’re making a real difference!💛

At just 13 weeks old, Barney was referred to our internal medicine department due to ongoing urinary incontinence. His owner was understandably concerned, as Barney was dribbling urine both while awake and asleep. After a thorough examination, our team conducted a CT scan, which revealed a severely enlarged kidney and an ectopic ureter. This condition meant that Barney’s ureter was connected to his urethra instead of his bladder, leading to constant leakage. Given the damage to his kidney, the best option was to refer Barney to our surgical team for the removal of the affected kidney and ureter. Fortunately, his other kidney and ureter were in good shape, giving us hope for a positive outcome. Dr. Tesh performed the surgery, and Barney was closely monitored in our emergency department. We're thrilled to share that Barney’s recovery was a success! His urinary continence improved significantly, and he’s now back home, living his best life as a happy, healthy puppy. His owner recently sent us an update, expressing gratitude to every department involved in his care. Barney’s journey is a reminder of the incredible teamwork and dedication of our staff. We're so glad to have been part of his story! #greencrossvethospital #veterinarymedicine #patienthighlight #veterinarysurgery #gvhteam #vethospital #veterinaryspecialists

💛THANKS A MILLION💛   We are thrilled to announce that we have exceeded our $1 million fundraising target and raised a record-breaking total of $1,359,755 for Vision Australia to fund 27 Seeing Eye Dogs for Australians who are blind or have low vision. Since 2014, the Petbarn Foundation partnership with Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dogs has funded the training of 179 Seeing Eye Dog pups, changing the lives of 179 Australians in building confidence, safety, independence and improving quality of life.   A BIG thank you to everyone who donated to this year's Petbarn Foundation Seeing Eye Appeal, this would not be possible without you! Special thanks to Royal Canin, Zoetis, and our dedicated Petbarn store teams, your support means the world to us. [Video description: The video starts with a still frame of a yellow background with a love heart cut out revealing a photo of a lady cuddling and kissing a Seeing Eye Dogs pup on the head. Above the love heart cut out, there is the Petbarn Foundation and Seeing Eye Dogs logos with a graphic of Petbarn's character, a puppy wearing a cape and a Seeing Eye Dog vest with text that reads "150 pups trained & counting…". Text on screen reads "Petbarn Foundation Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal THANK YOU". We then see various footage of Petbarn, Vision Australia and Jetstar staff members speaking to camera holding, playing and interacting with Seeing Eye Dogs puppies. Footage also shows four Seeing Eye Dogs puppies playing with toys, navigating an obstacle course and napping together. The video ends with a yellow background and the Petbarn Foundation and Vision Australia logos. Below the logos there is text that reads "Thank you for supporting the Petbarn Foundation Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal". Below the text the Petbarn puppy character sits wagging his tail.]

This is beautiful Oscar, Oscar was referred to Greencross Vet Hospital by the team at Greencross Macedon Ranges as a newly diagnosed diabetic. Oscar’s diabetes was so severe at time of presentation that he was in a disease state called Diabetic Ketoacidosis. In this condition, diabetic patients have such dangerous electrolyte, blood glucose and blood pH derangements that it can be life-threatening. During his stay in hospital, Oscar’s care was overseen by our critical care clinicians, Dr Timothy Conolly (MANZCVS) and Dr Liam Donaldson (MANZCVS, DipACVECC), with amazing support from our intensive care nurses. In addition to Oscar’s diabetes, he was also diagnosed with pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) on abdominal ultrasound. This, in addition to his previously known diagnosis of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone in the blood), made Oscar a challenging case to manage. Despite having many underlying comorbidities that made managing his diabetes difficult, Oscar was stabilised in our intensive care ward over the period of several days. His blood glucose and electrolyte abnormalities, thyroid hormone levels and pancreatitis were meticulously managed by our critical care nurses and veterinarians. Oscar had a feeding tube placed to allow adequate nutrition, and was eventually discharged home on twice-daily injectable insulin, along with medications for his hypothyroidism and pancreatitis. Oscar was very brave in the hospital, and despite having a guarded prognosis at admission to hospital, he has recovered extremely well. Such incredible work from our amazing team at Greencross Vet Hospital #greencrossvethospital #greencross #patienthighlight #vethospital #veterinarymedicine #greencrossmacedon #criticalcare

Meet Beautiful Millie! Millie presented to Greencross Vet Hospital for a three-day history of a reduced appetite. When our General Practice team assessed her, it was noted she had a very high temperature and abdominal pain. Millie was transferred to our emergency department for ongoing care and diagnostics. An ultrasound was performed of Millie that revealed she had an abscess associated with her right kidney, and as a result, bacteria-free within her abdominal cavity. This is a condition called “septic peritonitis” and carries a guarded prognosis, even with gold-standard care. Millie was rushed into surgery where our surgeon, Dr Tesh Smalle, removed Millie’s right kidney and ureter (a procedure called a “ureteronephrectomy”). Millie had her abdominal cavity flushed with sterile saline, and had two abdominal drains placed, along with a central venous catheter (a catheter that goes into the jugular vein), and an oesophageal feeding tube. Millie’s central venous catheter, feeding tube and post-operative care were performed by our ECC specialist, Dr Liam Donaldson. While in the initial 24 hours it was touch-and-go for beautiful Millie, she was extremely brave and stoic. In the days that followed Millie gradually felt better, and within three days of surgery, she was already eating and keen to go for walks! Millie was discharged four days after her surgery to recover at home. She’s done exceedingly well considering the odds were against her and has quickly become part of the GVH family.
