Good luck to all the Australian athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics over the next two weeks! 🥇 Did you know that at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics Australia won 16 gold medals and all of them were produced right here at the Mint? The gold medals were crafted by experts in our coining department who knew that the remarkable pieces would be treasured forever by some of the world’s best athletes, including Cathy Freeman, Ian Thorpe and Susie O’Neill. A total of 750 gold medals were made from 99.99 per cent pure silver - each plated in 6g of gold. A closely guarded example is currently on display in our gold exhibition alongside silver and bronze versions, produced by the Royal Australian Mint, all portraying a representation of the Sydney Opera House. 😊 Meet Guy Meredith - Our security guard with the welcoming smile! 😊 Guy has been a part of our team since 2014. He makes sure both employees and visitors feel safe and welcome when visiting the Mint and always has a positive attitude to everything he does. “Our work in security reaches all departments of the Mint and to everyone who visits. From the shop floor to the commercial area, coining division, visitors and contractors - providing protection of assets and people is our primary focus, followed closely by safety,” Guy says. 🎨 It was an inspiring time of recognition here at the Mint as we celebrated NAIDOC Week! We had the honour of hosting a special Aboriginal painting workshop conducted by the renowned artist Beverley Egan at our East Perth and refinery sites, giving our employees the unique opportunity to learn about the secret meanings behind Aboriginal art symbols and contribute to a collaborative canvas. Held across Australia in July, NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with this year's theme "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud," acknowledging the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. The paintings, based on Bev's celebrated work "Inclusion," will be proudly displayed in our buildings, symbolising the deep connection between people and the land. FROM THE ARCHIVES 📸 | The cost of building and equipping The Perth Mint was £58,256, an outstanding investment considering the economic and financial dividends it’s paid the State during 125 years of operations. Among the many jobs created were those of the original construction workers and tradesman, seen here in 1898, a year before the official opening. We received a silver accreditation by the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) as an LGBTQ employer of choice and were commended as a finalist in the Trans and Gender Diverse Inclusion Award at the Pride in Diversity AWEI National Awards held last month!
