What’s the best talent acquisition strategy for mines coming out of care and maintenance? As global commodity prices fluctuate, mining companies often find themselves in periods of care and maintenance. Internal HR teams may be reduced, leaving the remaining team not fully equipped for the rapid ramp-up required when market conditions improve. “Companies coming out of care and maintenance don’t always have the internal infrastructure ready to go from an HR perspective,” explains Justin Campbell, Head of Projects at Globe 24-7. How do you quickly scale your workforce to meet demands when operations resume? The most efficient option: a bulk recruitment campaign. One bulk recruitment option is RPO (Recruitment Process Outsourcing). It mirrors the outsourcing of operational functions, much like how a mining company may outsource load and haul to external contractors. In the context of recruitment, it doesn’t necessarily mean delegating all hiring processes to a third party: “RPO can assist by bringing in a team to fill those bulk roles on top of the current team that is already working in talent acquisition for the organisation.” RPO is not a ‘one size fits all’. Recruitment services can be scaled and customised. “This could be roles from trades-level positions and operators up to engineers and senior positions,” says Justin. Business-critical roles are filled, minimising time-to-hire and allowing operations to recommence swiftly and smoothly. “It’s very cost-effective when you’re ramping up for those volumes.” Miners can avoid the overhead costs associated with building and managing internal HR capacity from scratch and defer to expert RPO teams that are ready to go. How did this Colombian mine attract senior executive talent for a major expansion project? 💡A smarter talent acquisition strategy The $280m expansion project included a new underground mine and ore processing plant. They needed to source: Candidates with international mining experience ↳ For 15 project-critical management roles 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘁: -- Partnered with a recruitment firm with extensive local and global networks -- Requested a shortlist of skilled talent from within Colombia and internationally for key roles -- Delegated all pre-employment checks, scheduled interviews and medicals to the recruiter -- Asked the agency to work directly with the onsite team to onboard successful candidates 👷🏽This took the pressure off both the head office and the local recruitment team. It reduced their project burden during the ramp-up phase. And gave them confidence they had the right people in place to take the project forward.
