We can now support our clients as they do business across the whole of the country, and work closely with existing Gadens teams doing work in Canberra. Gadens will operate across the whole of the Country from offices physically located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. Gadens remains associated with leading independent law firm Lavan in Perth. Gadens continues to grow rapidly, with 11 new partners since January 2024. In the recent decision of ALI and ALJ (Privacy) [2024] AICmr 131 by the Australian Privacy Commissioner, the Respondent was found to have breached Australian Privacy Principle 6 after unsuccessfully relying on the employee records exemption to disseminate an employee’s personal information to approximately 110 head office employees. This decision sheds light on the scope of the employee records exemption under the existing Privacy Act and reinforces an employer’s privacy obligations to their employees. Gadens Partners Sinead Lynch, Michael Morris and Louise Rumble discuss the recent decision here https://lnkd.in/gWwGVaxG

We were thrilled to host the Australia China Business Council Victoria’s Australia China Health Summit 2024 at our Melbourne office. Thank you to Virginia Birrell and the ACBC for bringing together over 90 attendees at the summit, and to the panellists and moderators, including Gadens partners Jing Wang, Kelly Griffiths and Glenn McGowan KC. The summit not only highlighted the pivotal role Victoria plays in global health research but also emphasised the immense opportunities for Australian companies in the Chinese market. Jing Wang, who is Gadens' Head of China Practice, said "We are delighted with the success of the ACBC Victoria’s Australia China Health Summit 2024. Hosting this event at Gadens was a testament to our commitment to fostering international collaboration and innovation in the health and medtech sectors. We are proud to support such initiatives that drive growth and strengthen relationships in the sector."
ACBC Victoria’s Australia China Health Summit 2024 was held last week on 10 July in Melbourne at Gadens. The event underscored Victoria’s role as Australia’s health and research capital, and spotlighted opportunities for Chinese businesses to expand globally through Victoria. It also highlighted the advantages of using Hong Kong as a gateway into the Chinese market for Australian companies. Key Takeaways * Victoria has unique collaborative health, medtech, research and innovation ecosystems which support and accelerate research, product development and industry growth in this State * China’s Health China 2030 offers opportunities for Australian health and medtech companies in a market with an increasingly ageing population * It’s important to build long-term relationships with Chinese partners, understand cultural nuances and to pay frequent visits there for face to face communication * The State of Victoria is ‘punching well above its weight’ in research and grant funding and in its role in the global health product market *Hong Kong’s accessibility and support for English, Mandarin, and Cantonese speakers, along with grants and support for health research make it an ideal gateway for Australian companies to enter the China market. Sincere thanks to our speakers, moderators, generous sponsors Alithia Life Sciences, 360biolabs, a BioAgilytix company, Akesa, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO), MAH PHARMA LIMITED St Vincent's Private Hospital and the 95 guests who attended including Mr Bian and Mme Ji from the Chinese Consulate.
