As someone who is incredibly passionate about the foodservice industry, I think it’s only fair that I share where my love for food began. It started when I was seven years old. I used to spend school holidays at my grandparents farm and each day, without fail, I would bake a chocolate cake. Why, you might ask? Well, because I was in charge of making sure that everyone on the farm enjoyed morning tea. Looking back, there really was no other calling for me - I was destined to work in hospitality from that moment on. At school, that passion only deepened. I remember spending lunch breaks in the kitchen, perfecting my Christmas cake. I researched its history and worked tirelessly to make it the best it could be. It was small but powerful moments like these that shaped my love for cooking and hospitality. What was the moment you knew you were destined to build a career in the foodservice industry? Unpopular opinion: Making your food from scratch isn’t always better. Before you hit the comment section hard, hear me out. I’m not disputing that fresh and delicious produce, made from scratch, is a joy to eat when visiting a restaurant. All I’m saying is that there are fantastic pre-made alternatives to many key ingredients that will provide benefits to you and your foodservice business. People management is something managers and business owners either love or hate to do. One thing’s for certain though, no matter which side of the fence you sit on you’ll spend a lot of time doing it. Research shows that managers spend more than 20% of their time managing conflict in the workplace, which is too long as far as I’m concerned. So, how can you resolve staff conflict quickly and effectively in the workplace? Here are my top tips. ⭐ Do not deal with workplace conflict in front of the broader team - have conversations in private. Conflict can become fodder for workplace gossip, which can be damaging to your culture. ⭐ Try not to assume you know what is going on. I.e. One individual may look to be at the centre of a conflict but, in reality, they may be having a tough time or be an easy scapegoat for the broader team. ⭐ Look for operational ways to avoid workplace conflict, where possible. If two people really don’t get along, is there a way you can adjust workflow to minimise their interactions? Resolving conflict is part of being a manager and business owner.
