Electricity Safety Week is a fantastic opportunity for school students to learn about potential electrical hazards at home and within the community. This year, over 870 schools across our footprint are participating, receiving resource packs filled with engaging activities like activity sheets, posters, and circuit kits. Hear Chief People Officer, Amalie Smith highlight this year’s focus on renewable energy sources which are becoming more common in regional, rural, and remote communities. We are educating our young minds about these new technologies and fostering a safer and more informed future. At the Regional Australia Institute National Summit in Canberra last week, our CEO, John Cleland spoke to enabling faster, fairer connections for renewable energy projects across our region. The address specifically focused on making the most of our existing electricity distribution infrastructure. That is because it makes sense for communities and the energy transition, and in John's words "we know we can help". By leveraging our nearly 10,000 kms of sub-transmission network, we know we can host approximately 8 gigawatts of new renewable energy into the National Electricity Market. This approach not only speeds up progress but also minimises disruption for landholders. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3AEAb3o #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #RegionalAustralia #FutureEnergy

Inclusion and diversity are at the heart of our values, and we are proud to embed these principles in our daily culture. Through the development of diversity streams and reference groups, we are fostering a more inclusive workplace. Earlier this year, our efforts were recognised by WORK180, where we received two Equitable Workplace Awards (in the Mining, Resources & Energy and Pay Equity categories). This week, Work180 highlighted these achievements in a Q&A session, showcasing our commitment to creating an equitable work environment. Atop of our recent Future Energy Roadshows, last week we joined an event we have attended for many years: AgQuip. It is a notable example of how strong community relationships and events are a key to connecting with our customers. We engage to keep customers safe around electricity; seek their feedback and inputs about future plans; and also talk about new innovation and the future of energy. AgQuip's primary industry focus allows us to cover many areas. The future of energy is not just a concept; it’s a revolution happening in our backyards. In Armidale, Bathurst, Dubbo, Port Macquarie, and Wagga Wagga, we’re trialling the use of pole-mounted batteries. These batteries are a cornerstone in our journey towards a clean energy future. They also provide a community-centric approach that offers access to new energy solutions, supports renewable energy, and plays a crucial role in our transition to a cleaner, greener future. Now is a great time for economic development in regional NSW, and the upcoming ‘Energy and Innovation Conference' in Wagga Wagga will showcase that. At the Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils' (REROC) event, Chris Warris will speak to supporting our customers with electrification initiatives, and Brad Trethewey to the learnings from our first fully integrated streetlight EV charger trial. As gold sponsors, we'll also have an exhibit to enable customers to learn about electric vehicles, solar power, waste energy and community batteries. Enhancing power reliability and resilience is a key focus for our communities. Working together with the Ivanhoe community, last month we successfully commissioned an automatic generator to provide backup electricity supply to residences and businesses during unplanned power outages. The next phase of this project will be to build a battery that can provide a more permanent power solution for the surrounding community during unplanned power outages. We particularly want to call out the dedicated teams who worked closely with the community to address network reliability concerns across the design and testing phase. #RegionalDevelopment #Energytransition #SustainableEnergy

Our customer and community engagement is always on. Across the network footprint we continue to talk about the opportunities and challenges associated with the energy transition. In Bathurst last night, another Future Energy Roadshow brought together subject experts and members from the wonderful Central Tablelands region. A huge thanks to Dr Simon Wright, Senior Research Fellow on Energy and Circularity, Charles Sturt University for his lively moderation and the community for their participation. National Science Week drew to a close on Sunday, so we thought we'd highlight some of the great research being undertaken by scientists to support our communities and customers. One particular scientist - Bjorn Sturmberg from the ANU Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program - was last week named ACT Scientist of the Year. Bjorn worked as technical lead with us and many others on a transdisciplinary microgrid project known as the Southcoast µ-grid Reliability Feasibility (SµRF) project. The project explores ways to bolster the energy resilience of residents in the south coast shire of Eurobodalla. It arose following the devastating bushfires which impacted this community in 2019-2020 (pictured). Islandable microgrids are a key resilience initiative capable of keeping local energy networks powered when they are cut off from the national system, such as during a bushfire event.
