We are thrilled to be working alongside Ramboll and partners for Maitland City Council, Australia, on the iconic Walka Water Works. Located in the Hunter Valley, NSW, this State heritage-listed complex, set on 64 hectares of reserve, has a rich history with the main complex dating back to the 1880s. Originally the main water supply for the Lower Hunter Valley, it's a site of cultural interest and beauty, with an impressive polychromatic brick pumphouse as the main feature. Leading our work on the heritage management is Gary Marriner, who will oversee all aspects of the project, including conservation, archaeological impacts, and innovative heritage interpretation strategies: "The Walka Water Works reserve is a much loved piece of NSW history, and we're committed to preserving its legacy whilst adapting it for the future. Our approach will be both respectful of its past and visionary in terms of its potential." Our team in Perth recently took part in a cultural tour through Mooro Katta Gar-Up (Kings Park), led by Nyungar woman Kerry-Ann Winmar of Nyungar Tours. The team spent time exploring the beautiful park grounds, taking in views of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), and listening to traditional stories of the Nyungar people in Boorloo (Perth). Kerry-Ann introduced the team to an incredible variety of traditional medicine and bush food plants. This experience, held during the Nyungar season of Djilba, was a meaningful way to deepen the team's understanding of connection to Country. Thank you to Kerry-Ann for welcoming us, sharing your culture, and enriching our knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Partnering for Conservation on Evelyn Downs Station We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Bush Heritage Australia to map vegetation communities and conduct initial vegetation condition and species habitat baseline surveys on Evelyn Downs Station in northern South Australia. 🟢 235,000-hectare property, around the same size as the Australian Capital Territory. 🟢 It is situated in the Painted Desert region, a spectacular landscape of mesas, river channels and gibber plains. 🟢 Bush Heritage's largest-ever single land purchase. 🟢 Lies on the traditional lands of the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara & Yankunytjatjara people. 🟢 Home to several Commonwealth-listed endangered species, including the Arckaringa Daisy. Led by Tobias Scheid, we have a stellar team of approachable experts on this project. Ecologists Emrys Leitch and Lauren Heddle conducted initial fieldwork alongside Bush Heritage Ecologist, Ned Ryan-Schofield. 🌿 Following this fieldwork, Associate Ecologist Dr Paul Koch refined the vegetation mapping, crucial for helping Bush Heritage address key ecological questions and manage the property effectively. 🌱 Bush Heritage’s Healthy Landscape Manager in South Australia, Graeme Finlayson, highlighted the need for mapping as a key priority following the acquisition of the reserve. 🗺 With support from staff at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium, South Australia, the initial surveys have yielded exciting results, including 55 new plant species not previously recorded in or around the reserve, with over 30 lodged for range extensions or improved material at the South Australian Herbarium. Additionally, four new vegetation associations were added to the reserve's mapping.🌱 As dry conditions affected initial sampling, we will conduct additional surveys post-rainfall to enhance flora and fauna data. Our ecoacoustics expert May-Le Ng and National bat expert Terry Reardon (subcontractor), are currently finalising the acoustic analysis of bird and bat data, adding new records for the reserve. 🦇 This partnership is a testament to what can be achieved when passionate teams come together to protect and preserve our natural heritage. We look forward to continuing our work with Bush Heritage Australia to ensure the long-term conservation of Evelyn Downs Station. 📷Eco Logical Australia #EcoLogicalAustralia #TetraTech #LeadingWithScience #ApproachableExperts #FindYourPeople #EnvironmentalConsulting #MakeADifference #BushHeritageAustralia #SouthAustralia #BotanicGardensAustralia #Herbarium
