The NSW Government's commitment to ending no grounds evictions is a significant step forward for renters, particularly women and children experiencing domestic and family violence. Thank you to everyone who advocated for these changes over many years, including Domestic Violence NSW, Homelessness NSW, Tenants' Union of NSW, NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS), Women's & Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC), NSW Rental Commissioner Trina Jones and many others.

Today the Select Committee on Residential Tenancies Amendment (Prohibiting No Grounds Evictions) Bill 2024 held a public hearing. The bill aims to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 to prohibit landlords from terminating fixed-term or periodic lease agreements without cause and introduces specific grounds for tenant eviction. The Committee is inquiring into the bill provisions and heard from a range of witnesses at the hearing about grounds for eviction, enforceability, and possible unintended consequences. The Government unveiled an ambitious new housing plan in the 2024-25 budget, but hasn’t signed up to national mandatory design standards that require new developments to offer basic accessibility. These standards are not difficult or expensive: they simply require developers to build a step-free shower and entry to the houses. The Australian Building Codes Board modelling for these standards shows it will only add about 1% to the cost of a new build. Inaccessible housing leaves people isolated, at an increased risk of injury and unable to age at home. This newly created position is an exciting opportunity for a domestic and family violence expert who is passionate about reducing family violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children. It includes working alongside our Senior Aboriginal Policy Officer, to make a difference, with particular work to be done on Closing The Gap Target 13 and Recommendation 13 from the 2019 NSW Domestic Violence Death Review Team report.
